BRISTOL SEX OFFENDER JOHN SOUL SENTENCED FOR VICTIMIZATION IN REDCLIFFE
A 61-year-old man named John Soul has been handed a prison sentence of five years and four months after admitting to the serious crime of sexually assaulting another man.The sentencing took place at Bristol Crown Court on a recent Friday, marking a significant development in this disturbing case.
According to court reports, Soul, who resides on Ship Lane in the Redcliffe area of Bristol, targeted a young man in his early 20s during a night out in the city.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, was reportedly drugged by Soul after they became separated from their friends amidst the lively nightlife scene.
Police investigations revealed that Soul was a predatory individual who deliberately sought out a vulnerable victim, exploiting the situation for his own illicit purposes.
The incident occurred on the night of November 19, 2021.
The victim, unable to recall the events that transpired, only became aware of the assault the following day when he woke up and realized he had been sexually assaulted.
It was confirmed through forensic evidence that Soul and the victim had no prior acquaintance, which further underscored the predatory nature of the crime.
In a heartfelt personal statement read aloud in court, the victim described the profound emotional impact of the assault.
He expressed the difficulty he faced in confiding in his parents, describing how the experience left him feeling vulnerable and shattered his confidence.
The victim stated, "Telling my parents was really difficult.
This is not the sort of thing you anticipate having to tell [them] and during this I cried, which was the first time I have cried in a long time." He further explained that, as a tall, young, heterosexual male, the incident had deeply affected his sense of security and self-esteem.
"It has been a horribly traumatic incident, I myself feel quite mentally strong but even I have been traumatised by the whole incident," he added.
The victim emphasized that the actions of Soul, who took advantage of his vulnerability, had caused lasting emotional scars.
John Soul was formally charged in May 2022 and subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges in February of the following year.
Detective Sergeant Amy Hewitt from Avon and Somerset Police commented on the case, praising the victim's bravery in coming forward.
She stated, "The victim in this case has been extremely brave in coming forward to police.
He put aside his own concerns and wanted to make sure no one else was hurt by Soul and to keep others safe." Sergeant Hewitt further described Soul as a predator who deliberately targeted individuals who were alone and vulnerable, taking advantage of their circumstances for his own gratification.
As part of his sentence, Soul will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be required to register as a sex offender once he is released from prison, ensuring ongoing monitoring and safeguarding measures are in place to protect the community from further harm.
