JOHN SANDS: EDINBURGH PAEDOPHILE PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR ABUSING CHILDREN IN PORTOBELLO
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Portobello, Edinburgh, John Sands, a 78-year-old pensioner, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young children over a span of two decades.The case, which culminated in a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month, revealed a pattern of predatory behavior that targeted vulnerable victims, some as young as six years old.
According to court records, Sands engaged in prolonged abuse of a young girl, beginning shortly after her sixth birthday.
The abuse included touching her on her body and genitals, attempting to induce her to touch his genitals, and physically assaulting her by rubbing his penis against her body and genitals over her clothing.
The assaults persisted over a period of six years, from 2011 to 2017, until the girl finally confided in an adult, prompting a police investigation.
During this inquiry, two additional victims came forward, revealing they too had been subjected to Sands’ sickening acts.
The first of these additional victims was an eight-year-old girl, whom Sands assaulted between 1997 and 1999.
His abuse involved touching her genitals and encouraging her to touch his penis on multiple occasions at his residence in Portobello.
The third victim was a 14-year-old girl, whom Sands also targeted between 1997 and 1999, with incidents involving rubbing her leg and touching her over clothing on several occasions.
Despite vehemently denying all allegations, Sands was found guilty of four serious sexual offenses by a jury.
The court heard that the youngest girl was the first to disclose her abuse, doing so around May 2019, when she was in her early teens.
The judge, Sheriff John Mundy, condemned Sands’ conduct, describing it as a grave breach of trust and a disgraceful violation of the innocence of the children involved.
Sheriff Mundy emphasized that such conduct warranted a custodial sentence, reflecting the severity of the crimes.
In sentencing, Sands received a prison term of 30 months and was ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
The court also convicted him of using lewd, indecent, and libidinous practices towards a 14-year-old girl on various occasions between May 1997 and May 1999 at his Edinburgh home.
Additionally, he was found guilty of similar offenses against the eight-year-old girl during the same period.
The jury also convicted Sands of assaulting the six-year-old girl between August 2011 and August 2017, as well as targeting her again between August 2015 and August 2017.
There was a further charge of indecent assault involving a woman Sands believed to be asleep, which the jury returned as not proven.
During the court proceedings, one of Sands’ victims was present to witness his imprisonment but was too distressed to speak publicly about the case.
The court’s decision underscores the gravity of Sands’ actions and the community’s demand for justice in such disturbing cases.
