JOHN PORRITT FROM DEWSBURY SENTENCED FOR PREDATORY SEXUAL OFFENSES IN LEEDS AND KIRKLEES
In March 2021, John Porritt, a convicted sex offender from Dewsbury, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after committing a series of brutal sexual assaults that shocked the local community and highlighted ongoing concerns about dangerous offenders in the area.Porritt, aged 29 at the time, was found to have a troubling criminal history, including a prior conviction for attempting to rape a child under the age of 13 in 2010, which resulted in a four-year sentence in a young offender institution.
His past crimes underscored the severity of his current actions and the potential ongoing threat he posed to women.
The most recent incident took place in Kirklees on April 10, 2019, when Porritt targeted a woman at her home.
According to court reports, he knew the victim and took advantage of her absence of her partner to force his way into her residence.
Porritt's aggressive entry involved him barging into the property, during which he exposed himself to the woman.
The court heard that he then grabbed her by the neck, attempting to remove her clothing despite her repeated pleas for him to stop.
The assault escalated as Porritt sexually assaulted the woman, who was overwhelmed by fear and panic, suffering a panic attack during the ordeal.
Despite her distress, she managed to contact her partner for help.
Porritt fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by police after they responded to the incident.
Evidence collected from the scene, including saliva and DNA, confirmed his involvement, with traces found on the victim’s neck.
Further details revealed that Porritt attempted to kiss the woman and put his arm around her, but she rejected his advances.
In a disturbing act of taunting, he took her keys while she was outside his flat and then, in a violent display, dragged her into his home by her hair.
Once inside, she was forcibly taken to the bedroom, where a prolonged sexual assault occurred.
The woman sustained cuts and bruises from being restrained during the attack, leaving her deeply traumatized.
At Leeds Crown Court, Porritt pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of rape, attempted rape, assault by penetration, and two counts of sexual assault.
His criminal record also includes a history of predatory sexual offenses, which influenced the severity of his sentencing.
Judge Robin Mairs addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of Porritt’s past and present crimes.
He stated, “Ten years ago you were guilty of predatory sexual offences.
It would appear that predatory sexual aggression has not left you.
When in drink and on drugs, you attack without warning.
You clearly have a problem with alcohol, which is a trigger, along with drugs.” The judge further explained that an extended prison sentence was necessary due to the serious danger Porritt posed to women.
He highlighted the enormous risk and harm associated with his actions, which justified the lengthy custodial period.
Porritt was sentenced to serve at least 11 and a half years in prison, with the requirement that he spend at least two-thirds of that time behind bars.
Following his release, he will be subject to a six-year license period, during which he will be monitored to prevent further offenses.
Porritt’s case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the justice system in managing repeat offenders and protecting vulnerable members of the community from predatory individuals like him.
