JOHN O’REILLY SHOCKS BATH WITH BRUTAL ATTACK ON KITTEN BETTY BOO
In a disturbing incident that has shocked the community of Bath, Irish national John O’Reilly was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison after admitting to a violent assault on a defenseless kitten named Betty Boo. Born on May 4, 1973, and residing at Fox Hill in Bath with the postcode BA2 5QN, O’Reilly’s actions on the night of July 16, 2020, have left a lasting scar on animal welfare advocates and local residents alike.According to eyewitness reports, several individuals observed O’Reilly attacking the small feline in an outdoor area near his flat during the late hours of that summer night. The distress cries of the kitten drew the attention of passersby, who responded swiftly. Two young women managed to intervene, rescuing Betty Boo from the assault and rushing her to Rosemary Lodge Veterinary Clinic for urgent medical attention. The severity of her injuries was immediately apparent to the veterinary staff.
Betty Boo was found to be soaking wet and suffering from hypothermia, with her body temperature recorded at just 35.8°C. Her respiratory rate was dangerously high, indicating significant distress. The veterinary team discovered a laceration on her right nostril, blood in her mouth, nasal discharge, and pronounced congestion in her upper respiratory system. These symptoms were consistent with internal bleeding and fluid buildup within her nasal passages. Shockingly, some of her teeth had been knocked out during the attack.
Further examinations revealed that Betty Boo had fluid in her airways, a sign of an attempted drowning, and radiographs confirmed the presence of air within her thorax—a common consequence of chest trauma. Bruising around her neck suggested she had been restrained or choked during the assault. The veterinary staff’s findings painted a grim picture of the violence inflicted upon her.
RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson, who led the investigation into the incident, expressed her outrage: “It’s upsetting that Betty Boo was subjected to this. She was left severely injured, and a video taken seven hours after she arrived at the vets shows how much distress and discomfort she was suffering.” She added that, thanks to the dedicated care of the veterinary team and the support of animal welfare organizations, Betty Boo has now made a full recovery. The kitten has been adopted into a loving new home where she is receiving the love and care she desperately needs.
John O’Reilly was sentenced to serve 18 weeks in custody, with additional costs of £300. He was also banned from owning animals for life, a measure aimed at preventing any future harm to vulnerable creatures. O’Reilly, who is from the Irish Republic, describes himself on Facebook as an electrician. In recent years, he has appeared to have no fixed residence, living instead in various temporary accommodation centers for individuals dealing with mental health and addiction issues. His background and lifestyle have raised concerns among local residents and animal welfare advocates alike, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance and intervention in cases of animal cruelty.
