JOHN O’FLAHERTY, EDINBURGH PAEDOPHILE, FACES LIFE SENTENCE FOR HISTORICAL SEX CRIMES
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Edinburgh community, John O’Flaherty, aged 65, now faces the possibility of a life sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses committed over a span of more than a decade. The recent court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse targeting both children and adult women, with O’Flaherty’s crimes dating back to the 1980s and continuing into the 1990s.
O’Flaherty’s criminal history includes a previous conviction in 2017, where he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the rape of two young girls in Edinburgh.
These heinous acts were part of a larger paedophile ring, details of which have been documented elsewhere, but the recent convictions add a new and troubling chapter to his criminal record.
Following the latest sentencing, a judge ordered a comprehensive risk assessment to be conducted, which could result in the imposition of an Order for Lifelong Restriction, effectively keeping him incarcerated for life.
The court heard harrowing details of O’Flaherty’s predatory behavior, which included the exploitation of a young boy from the age of 10 in 1984.
The victim was subjected to repeated abuse and rape by O’Flaherty and his now-deceased accomplice, Billy King.
The child was often lured with promises of sweets, a tactic that allowed the offenders to maintain control over their victim.
The abuse persisted over a two-year period, with incidents taking place in various locations, including an ice cream van, a flat in Pennywell, and a lock-up near Granton.
Advocate depute Lisa Gillespie highlighted the disturbing nature of the offenders’ “dream job” — working at an ice cream van — which they used as a cover for their predatory activities.
The court was also told about a separate incident on January 1, 1996, when O’Flaherty raped a teenage girl after she had been drinking at a flat in Longstone to celebrate Hogmanay.
Despite being told to leave, he forcibly restrained her by covering her mouth before assaulting her sexually.
Further allegations detailed O’Flaherty’s brutal treatment of an adult woman, whom he repeatedly raped at various houses in North Edinburgh between 1980 and 1992.
During these assaults, the victim was left shouting and screaming, and O’Flaherty also physically assaulted her, slapping and punching her.
On one occasion, he chased her while wielding swords, demonstrating a pattern of violent and controlling behavior.
During the latest trial, O’Flaherty denied multiple charges, but the court found him guilty of three counts of rape, three indecency offenses against children, and an assault.
The judge, Lord Summers, ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders’ register.
O’Flaherty is currently remanded in custody as authorities prepare a detailed report on his risk to the public and potential for reoffending.
