JOHN NIXON FROM COLCHESTER SENTENCED FOR INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Colchester, 72-year-old John Nixon was found to be in possession of a significant number of indecent images depicting children.The incident came to light after police investigations into suspicious online activity led them to his residence on St Peter’s Street in Colchester.
Authorities conducted a thorough search of Nixon’s home following concerns raised during an online chat room investigation.
During the search, law enforcement officials seized a laptop, a USB stick, and two external hard drives, all of which contained illicit material.
The digital devices revealed a total of 135 indecent images categorized into different levels of severity: 40 images classified as Category A, 11 as Category B, and 84 as Category C.
Additionally, investigators uncovered 21 extreme pornographic images, further highlighting the severity of the material found.
John Nixon faced multiple charges in connection with these findings, including three counts of making indecent images of children, possessing prohibited images of a child, and possessing extreme pornographic images.
During police interviews, Nixon maintained that he was unaware of how these images had come to be stored on his devices.
He categorically denied any attraction to children, despite the evidence suggesting otherwise.
In court, Nixon admitted to the charges but insisted he did not have knowledge of the origin of the images.
A pre-sentence report revealed that Nixon had ongoing medical issues and faced considerable difficulties throughout 2016, which may have impacted his behavior.
The report also noted that Nixon had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, demonstrating some level of remorse.
During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Jeremy Benson QC emphasized the seriousness of the offences, stating, “You must understand the courts take these offences seriously.
The reason being that the children that appear in these videos and or pictures are being exploited, and if there is a demand for them then children will continue to be exploited.” The judge acknowledged Nixon’s age and previous good character but also pointed out that Nixon was first arrested on August 19, 2017, and had been awaiting sentencing for over three years, which was not his fault.
Ultimately, Nixon was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
As part of his sentence, he is required to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity and undertake 50 hours of unpaid work.
Furthermore, he will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for a period of seven years, aimed at preventing any future offending and protecting the community from potential harm.
