JOHN NEWMAN FROM MANOR PARK DENIED WEB ACCESS RESTRICTION RELIEF BY COURT
In a recent legal development, John Newman, a resident of Manor Park, has seen his request to be reinstated online rejected by the Court of Appeal. Newman, aged 46, was previously convicted and sentenced to three years in prison at Southwark Crown Court last October after admitting to serious charges involving child exploitation images.His crimes included making 13 counts of indecent images of children and possessing additional indecent images. The court also imposed a Sexual Offenders Prevention Order (SOPO) on Newman, which explicitly prohibits him from owning or using any computer with internet access unless it is strictly for work or educational purposes.
Newman's legal team appealed the decision, specifically challenging the web ban, arguing that it was overly restrictive. However, the appeal was swiftly dismissed by three senior judges, including Mr. Justice Maddison, Lord Justice Moses, and Judge Clement Goldstone. The judges took less than five minutes to reject Newman’s plea, reaffirming the original restrictions imposed by the court.
The case was brought to light after police arrested Newman in March 2009. Authorities had detected him engaging in activities within online chat rooms that are known to be frequented by paedophiles, often characterized by explicit and lurid content. During the investigation, law enforcement officials discovered a staggering collection of illegal material on Newman’s devices, including over 24,000 images depicting child abuse and 384 video clips, many of which police classified as among the most depraved levels of such content. Additionally, there were approximately 150,000 images that police deemed unnecessary to examine further.
A pre-sentence report prepared for the court described Newman as posing a “medium risk” to children, highlighting the potential danger his actions could pose to vulnerable individuals. Despite his acceptance of the prison sentence, Newman’s attempt to regain internet privileges was firmly denied, with the court emphasizing the severity of his offenses and the importance of ongoing restrictions to protect the public.
