JOHN MURPHY, THE LONGRIDGE PREDATOR, SENTENCED AFTER DECADES OF ABUSE IN WEST LOTHIAN

In a harrowing case that spans over three decades, John Murphy, a man from Longridge, West Lothian, was finally brought to justice for his long history of abusing young girls. The grim revelations emerged during a court hearing where Murphy was sentenced to eight years in prison, a sentence that many victims and advocates believe is insufficient given the severity and duration of his crimes.

Murphy, who never married and lived with his epileptic brother at Northfield Terrace in Longridge, was accused of preying on vulnerable children through various manipulative and abusive tactics. His victims ranged in age from as young as four to older teenagers, with some abuse dating back to 1962. One of the most vocal victims, a woman now 38 years old named June, courageously shared her story, revealing that her ordeal began when she was just four years old. She described Murphy as a family friend whom she affectionately called 'uncle,' a figure she trusted until his true nature was exposed.

June recounted how Murphy's abuse was relentless, involving physical violence, threats, and trips under the guise of family outings, which he exploited to carry out his heinous acts. Her account detailed how she felt trapped and helpless, unable to confide in her parents because she believed they would not believe her. Her suffering led her to run away from home multiple times, eventually ending up in care until she was 15. The trauma she endured pushed her into drug addiction and, ultimately, into prostitution as a means of survival.

Her decision to report Murphy came in 1994 after she saw him with a 10-year-old girl, fearing that he was about to victimize another child. Her report led to his arrest, and Murphy later admitted to abusing the young girl in court. However, June expressed her dissatisfaction with the length of his sentence, feeling it was too lenient considering the extent of his crimes. She revealed that she and other victims had previously reported him to the police in 1982 after he received a three-month sentence for abusing other children, but no action was taken at that time because authorities were unaware of the full scope of his offenses.

During the trial at the High Court in Airdrie, it was disclosed that Murphy used babysitting and involvement in youth activities as methods to gain access to his victims. The judge, Lord Coulsfield, acknowledged that if Murphy had been prosecuted closer to the time of the offenses, he could have faced sentences of ten years or more. Despite this, Murphy was sentenced to eight years, a decision that left June and other victims feeling that justice was not fully served. She expressed her fears that Murphy might reoffend once released, warning that he would likely return to his predatory behavior.

Defense attorney Steve MacGibbon described Murphy as a
