A VICTIMS' rights group has expressed outrage after it was revealed that John Munro, a convicted rapist, has repeatedly dismissed his defence lawyers in efforts to avoid sentencing.
Munro was found guilty at the High Court in Kilmarnock in January last year of raping an 18-year-old woman in Barrhead, Renfrewshire.
The Scottish Court Service confirmed that Munro, 34, of Paisley, has requested the withdrawal of his legal team up to 13 times during his court appearances for sentencing.
A spokesperson from Victim Support Scotland highlighted the emotional stress the victims experience and urged courts to consider this when handling applications for legal extensions.
Munro has reportedly written to the Law Society of Scotland claiming he cannot be punished for the crime because he believes the sentencing period has elapsed.
However, an SCS spokeswoman clarified that Munro is a convicted rapist who has been legally found guilty and will be sentenced soon.
He is scheduled for sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh on March 31.
