JOHN MEADE FROM SOUTHPORT JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON GIRL AT STANLEY HIGH SCHOOL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Southport, John Meade, a former science teacher at Stanley High School, has been sentenced to prison for the sexual assault of a young girl. The 49-year-old educator was found guilty of committing ten separate sexual offenses against a girl who was only 12 years old at the time of the incidents.

These heinous acts came to light in April when the young victim, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, made a 999 emergency call to the police. She had been too frightened to speak out earlier, worried about what Meade might do if she revealed her fears, despite the fact that he never explicitly threatened her. Her concern was also rooted in her doubt whether her claims would be believed, which delayed her reporting of the abuse.

John Meade, who resides on Railway Road in Southport, had a career spanning over three decades. He initially worked as a laboratory technician before retraining to become a teacher. Throughout his career, he was regarded as a dedicated professional, and there was no prior indication of misconduct until this case surfaced. When he was first arrested, Meade chose not to comment publicly. However, during his initial court appearance last month, he pleaded guilty to all ten counts of sexual assault.

The victim’s mother expressed her relief upon learning of Meade’s admission of guilt. She described how her daughter’s demeanor changed dramatically when she was told that Meade had confessed, noting that her daughter “let out a big sigh of relief” and her body language softened.

Defense lawyer Paul Lewis highlighted Meade’s previously clean record, emphasizing that he had served many young people well over the years. Lewis also pointed out that Meade, who had been trained in safeguarding children, was “thoroughly ashamed” of his actions and was shocked by his own behavior. He revealed that Meade had not yet confided in his elderly father about the crimes, fearing it might destroy their relationship.

Following his arrest, Meade was initially suspended from his teaching duties. He subsequently resigned from his position at Stanley High School. The court, presided over by Judge David Aubrey, QC, sentenced Meade to four years in prison. Additionally, he was placed under a 10-year sexual offences prevention order and was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely.

Judge Aubrey addressed Meade directly, stating, “You are a man who for the last 30 years has worked in educational establishments. There is not the slightest suspicion that during those many, many years while you have been working with children and for children, whether as an assistant or teacher for the last 15 years, you have behaved in anything other than an impeccable and proper and appropriate manner. How it was and why it was you did that which you did only you will ever know. The court has observed you are a broken man.”
