JOHN MASKELL FROM NOTTINGHAM ESCAPES IMMEDIATE JAIL AFTER CHILD SEX ABUSE ADMISSION

In August 2017, a 66-year-old man from Nottingham, John Maskell, was spared immediate imprisonment after admitting to serious child sexual abuse charges.

The case was heard at Nottingham Crown Court, where Recorder Jason Macadam delivered a sentence that reflected both the severity of the offences and Maskell’s remorse.

Maskell was found guilty of three sexual assaults involving a young girl, with the incidents having occurred nearly a decade prior to the court proceedings.

The court was informed that the victim, whose identity remains protected, did not disclose the abuse for several years.

She only confided in someone after experiencing mental health issues, which prompted her to seek treatment approximately eight years after the abuse took place.

Prosecutor Simon Ash detailed that the girl had initially kept silent out of fear and confusion.

She found Maskell, who resided on Lawrence Avenue in Eastwood, intimidating and did not understand the nature of what was happening at the time.

As she grew older, her understanding of the abuse increased, and she recognized the harm inflicted upon her.

During the court proceedings, Maskell was questioned about the allegations.

He claimed to have no memory of the incidents, describing the acts as “one mistake.” However, he later acknowledged that his actions were wrong, describing them as “shameful.” The impact of the abuse on the girl was significant.

She suffered from nightmares, anxiety, and difficulties in her relationships with men.

The court also heard that Maskell had made dismissive comments about the situation, including describing the abuse as “clowning around” and suggesting that the girl might have been “attention seeking.” In his sentencing remarks, Recorder Jason Macadam emphasized the importance of Maskell’s acknowledgment of his wrongdoing.

He imposed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, meaning Maskell would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.

Additionally, the court ordered a lifetime ban preventing Maskell from having unsupervised contact with girls under 16, aiming to protect potential future victims.

The judge warned Maskell that any further criminal activity within the next two years could result in him being sent directly to prison, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed his actions and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children in Nottingham.
