JOHN MARCELLINO FROM TARBOLTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN AYR
In a case that has spanned nearly two decades, John Marcellino, a 54-year-old man from Tarbolton, Ayrshire, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences. The crimes, which involved the sexual assault and rape of young girls, occurred at a residence in Ayr between December 1998 and August 2000.The court heard that the offences were committed against three schoolgirls, with the victims being notably young at the time. Judge Johanna Johnston QC addressed Marcellino directly during the sentencing, stating, "You were convicted of a catalogue of sexual offending which took place when the complainers were young girls. The damage you have caused to them has been profound." Her words underscored the severity of the impact these crimes have had on the victims' lives.
Throughout the proceedings, Marcellino maintained his innocence. His defence lawyer, Lorraine Glancy, emphasized that her client continues to deny the charges. She also highlighted that prior to suffering a stroke a few years ago, Marcellino was considered a dedicated and hardworking member of his community in Tarbolton. Despite this, the court found the evidence sufficient to convict him of the heinous offences.
As part of his sentence, Marcellino has been placed on the sex offenders’ register, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities following his release. The case has brought to light the long-lasting effects of sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims who come forward many years after the crimes occurred.
