JOHN MADEN'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN MANCHESTER: UNIMAGINABLE TORTURE AND MURDER OF 12-YEAR-OLD TIA RIGG

On January 12, 2011, a profoundly disturbing case unfolded in Manchester that shocked the entire community and drew widespread condemnation. John Maden, aged 38, was convicted of heinous crimes involving the brutal murder of his 12-year-old niece, Tia Rigg, a tragedy that has left a permanent scar on all who knew her.

According to court proceedings and police reports, Maden’s actions were driven by a disturbing obsession with snuff movies and extreme sexual violence. Investigations revealed that he had downloaded numerous internet files containing graphic descriptions of child murder, including instructions on how to prolong the suffering of victims. These materials included titles such as “belly stabbing” and “throat crush,” which served as a sickening guide to inflicting maximum pain and extending the agony of a child during murder.

On the day before the murder, Maden had visited Tia at his sister Lynne Rigg’s home in Manchester, inviting her to come and see his dog. The following day, he contacted his sister again, requesting her to send Tia over to babysit his ten-year-old daughter. Approximately 45 minutes after this phone call, Maden, who had previously admitted to both rape and murder, dialed 999 from his residence and calmly confessed to the crime, stating, “I’ve just finished killing her now.” When asked by the operator why he had committed such an atrocity, Maden responded coldly, “Because I felt like it.”

Police officers arrived at Maden’s home in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, to find a scene of horror. Tia Rigg was discovered dead in a spare bedroom, naked except for her socks, with her hands tied behind her back. A guitar string was wrapped around her neck, and nearby were two blood-stained knives. Evidence indicated she had been subjected to sexual assault with an object, and her body bore signs of severe trauma.

Further investigation uncovered a disturbing library of snuff films depicting killings, rape, child abuse, and extreme sexual violence. Maden, who was unemployed at the time, had also downloaded documents with titles such as “belly stabbing” and “throat crush,” which provided detailed instructions on child murder. Prosecutor Gordon Cole QC described these files as containing descriptions of stabbing a child in the stomach to prolong death and administering medication to keep victims conscious longer, highlighting the premeditated and calculated nature of the crime.

Medical tests confirmed that Tia had been drugged with tablets prescribed to Maden, who had previously reported to his general practitioner experiencing “psychotic episodes.” The court heard that the internet texts and materials were among the most chilling aspects of this deeply disturbing case. Mr. Justice Brian Keith, presiding over the trial, sentenced Maden to life imprisonment, emphasizing the severity and depravity of his actions. He stated that this was one of those exceptional cases where the only appropriate punishment was life without the possibility of early release, comparing Maden’s depravity to notorious killers like the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe and Moors Murderer Ian Brady.

During the sentencing, Mr. Justice Keith condemned Maden’s actions, stating, “This is one of those exceptional cases in which the only just punishment requires you to be imprisoned for the rest of your life. Early release provisions should not apply.”

Details of the crime revealed that Maden had a collection of approximately 2,000 pornographic images and had previously visited Tia at his sister’s home, inviting her to see his dog. The following day, he manipulated her into coming over for babysitting duties, which culminated in his tragic and horrific act. Maden later claimed that a “bad voice” in his head had compelled him to commit the murder.

In a heartfelt statement, Lynne Rigg, Tia’s mother, expressed her grief and the profound impact of her daughter’s death. She said, “Tia was my baby girl. She was always happy and never sad. She brought a smile to everyone who she met. Tia wasn’t just my daughter she was my best friend. When this nightmare happened it killed me inside. My heart has been broken and will never mend. But now justice has been done at least Tia can rest in peace.”

Additionally, Tia’s aunt Susan reflected on the family’s ongoing pain, stating, “The family will never be able to understand or come to terms with what has happened to Tia.” The case has left a lasting impact on the Manchester community, highlighting the depths of depravity that can exist and the importance of justice for the innocent.
