JOHN MACNEIL SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN HULL
In March 2015, a disturbing case of long-standing sexual abuse came to light in Hull, involving John Macneil, a 63-year-old man whose heinous actions spanned over two decades.Macneil was convicted of a series of grave offenses, including 14 counts of rape and six counts of gross indecency with a child, after a jury found him guilty of these serious charges.
Macneil’s victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, endured a prolonged period of silence and suffering.
Her ordeal only surfaced after Macneil, in a disturbing act of manipulation, visited her home years after the last incident and asked her to show him her breasts "for old time’s sake." This encounter triggered a wave of flashbacks and nightmares, forcing her to confront the trauma she had kept hidden for many years.
During the trial at Hull Crown Court, Macneil showed no visible remorse or emotion, merely shaking his head as the jury delivered their guilty verdicts.
The court heard how he had systematically controlled and abused his victim, convincing her that no one would believe her if she ever disclosed the abuse.
This manipulation kept her silent for years, allowing his crimes to continue unchecked.
The court was told that Macneil’s control over his victim was reinforced by his presence at her home, where he made inappropriate requests.
On one occasion, her partner returned home unexpectedly and overheard Macneil instructing her to "get your t*** out," an act that finally prompted her to confide in her partner about the abuse.
Prosecutor Geraldine Kelly explained that the victim’s decision to report the crimes was driven by her suffering from recurring nightmares and distress.
Her courage in coming forward was a pivotal moment in bringing Macneil to justice.
During police interviews, Macneil claimed that he had consensual sex with the victim when she was 18 but denied any allegations of indecent assault or rape.
Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty of the serious charges, leading to his sentencing.
Judge Tahir Khan QC sentenced Macneil to 14 years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.
The judge stated, "I have no doubt, at all, you deliberately planned to abuse her the way you did, beginning with low-level gross indecency offences and progressing on to sex offending of the utmost gravity.
This was completely beyond imagination." Furthermore, the judge highlighted the manipulative hold Macneil had over his victim, noting that he had convinced her that no one would believe her if she told.
Upon release from prison, Macneil will be required to sign the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct in the community.
