NOTTINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR THROWING BOTTLES AT RELATIVE AND CAUSING INJURY
A man has been jailed after he threw bottles at a relative and smashed another on his head.
John Kemp, 35, of no fixed address, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for wounding with intent following an attack on his uncle, who has learning difficulties, on the evening of March 30, 2021.
During the court hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, Prosecutor Steven Kemp described how an argument over family owing money escalated.
Initially, Kemp threw a beer bottle which missed his uncle but hit a cupboard.
His uncle then fled into the bathroom.
Kemp then threw another bottle that shattered on his uncle’s arm and subsequently struck him on the head, wounding his scalp.
The uncle was taken to hospital to receive stitches.
The court heard that Kemp’s victim was left terrified of seeing him again and was afraid to go out alone, knowing Kemp’s history.
Kemp, who has 11 previous convictions including criminal damage and drunk and disorderly behaviour, was under the influence of alcohol during the incident and had been imprisoned for 10 months in 2005.
His address had previously been recorded as Emmanuel House, Goose Gate, Nottingham.
The judge sentenced him to three and a half years and also granted a 10-year restraining order for the victim, ordering Kemp to pay a victim surcharge.
The judge highlighted Kemp’s troubled background, indicating his childhood had "cast a long shadow" over him, and acknowledged he may be suffering from PTSD as a result.
The court noted that the violence could have caused serious injury and emphasized the severity of Kemp’s actions.
