JOHN HOWLETT OF IPSWICH SENT TO PRISON FOR CHILD ABUSE IN THE 1970S

In a case that has shocked the community of Ipswich, a local grandfather named John Howlett has been sentenced to prison after admitting to serious sexual offenses committed against two young girls during the 1970s.

John Howlett, aged 65 and residing on Lanercost Way in Ipswich, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault. The court proceedings revealed that Howlett had engaged in inappropriate and criminal behavior involving a four-year-old girl and her sister, both of whom were victims of his abuse.

According to the evidence presented at Ipswich Crown Court, Howlett had kissed the young girl and coerced her into performing an indecent act. These disturbing acts took place several decades ago, but the case only came to light recently when the victim, now an adult woman, became visibly upset while watching a television program that addressed issues of child abuse.

During this emotional moment, her sister, who was also a victim of Howlett’s abuse, comforted her and expressed understanding of her distress. The sister confirmed that she, too, had been sexually abused by Howlett, revealing the extent of his misconduct and the long-lasting impact it had on the victims.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth addressed the court, acknowledging that although Howlett was described as a man of previously good character, the nature of his crimes was particularly heinous. The judge emphasized that these acts represented a severe breach of trust and were morally reprehensible, describing them as “wicked offences” and “an appalling breach of trust.”

As a result of his guilty plea and the gravity of his actions, Howlett was sentenced to nine months in prison. Additionally, he was placed on an extended license for three years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offending. The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender, ensuring that his details would be kept on the sex offenders’ register for the required period, reflecting the seriousness with which the justice system views such violations.

This case highlights the importance of addressing historical abuse and the ongoing efforts to bring perpetrators to justice, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
