JOHN HEWITT FROM PRESTON SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR ABUSE IN HULL AND HESSLE
In a case that has spanned decades, John Hewitt, a 74-year-old man from Preston, near Hull, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against three young children during the 1980s in Hull and Hessle. The court proceedings culminated in Hewitt being found guilty on Tuesday at Grimsby Crown Court of a total of nineteen counts, which included eight counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of indecency with a child.
The victims, who were between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time of the offenses, endured a prolonged period of suffering that only came to light after many years.
The gravity of the crimes and the lengthy delay in justice highlight the enduring trauma inflicted upon these young individuals.
During the sentencing, Judge Mark Bury addressed Hewitt directly, emphasizing the lack of remorse or sympathy shown by the defendant throughout the trial.
The judge remarked that it had taken forty years for Hewitt's actions to be brought to justice, metaphorically stating that it had taken “40 years for his chickens to come home to roost.” In a stern tone, Judge Bury made it clear that Hewitt’s fate was sealed, stating, “If you are to die in prison serving this sentence then so be it.” Hewitt was subsequently sentenced to a total of 24 years behind bars, a punishment that reflects the severity of his crimes and the impact on his victims.
This case underscores the importance of perseverance in the pursuit of justice for victims of sexual abuse, especially when the crimes occurred many years prior.
Hewitt’s conviction and sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the long arm of the law and the ongoing fight against child abuse in the UK.
