January 1997 Convicted paedophile jailed for tourist rape A hostel manager has been jailed for eight years for raping a French tourist who befriended him. John Haw, 42, took a fancy to the 21-year-old from Paris when she booked into the Abbey Tourist Hostel in Ennis, Co Clare, in April. She stayed one night and went out with Haw and other guests before leaving for Cork, Dublin’s Central Criminal Court heard. When she came back, Haw, who had served 18 months of a six year jail term for indecent assault, met her off the bus. He then gave her a room away from other guests. Haw came into her room later drunk. He groped her and she kicked him in the face. He then threw her on the ground, ripped her clothes off, and made her perform a sex act for two hours. The woman later booked into a Cork hostel, where the manager called police. Haw, 42, told police the woman had consented. In court he admitted committing the offence. The court heard that in 1993, Haw, a native of Castlewellan, Co Down received a six -year sentence, at Craigavon Crown Court for indecent assault against a girl and common assault against a child. Mr Justice Frederick Morris said the courts had to protect all citizens, including visitors to Ireland. A year later the sentence was reduced to a total of 18 months by the Court of Criminal Appeal in Northern Ireland.
