JOHN GRUNNER CAUGHT IN LIVERPOOL TRYING TO MEET 14-YEAR-OLD BOY IN SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING PLOT
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through Liverpool, 44-year-old John Grunner was caught attempting to meet a minor for sexual activity, leading to his appearance in Liverpool Crown Court in January 2023.The incident unfolded after police intercepted Grunner at a crucial moment, just as he was about to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old boy, with whom he had been engaging in a series of explicit online conversations over a span of nearly two weeks.
According to prosecutor Nadine Nemat, the case began on October 24 when an undercover officer, posing as a 14-year-old boy, initiated contact with Grunner on an online platform.
During their initial exchange, Grunner, who was using the alias “JUK,” was informed that the other party was only 14 years old.
Despite this, Grunner quickly inquired about the minor’s sexual experiences, asking if he had “done gay stuff before,” and revealing that he had previously engaged in sexual activities with an older boy at a party.
The conversation soon moved to the encrypted messaging app Wickr, where Grunner expressed his desire to meet the boy in person, stating, “So you’re really 14, I don’t mind, wish you were closer,” while also sending a fully clothed photograph of himself.
As the dialogue continued, the communication shifted to Snapchat, where Grunner asked if the ‘boy’ was being “naughty” and suggested he might have “some naughty pics to share.” He also sent an image of himself in his boxers with his trousers pulled down, further indicating his inappropriate intentions.
On October 28, Grunner continued to push for more explicit content, saying, “I bet you’d be a right horny boy, we would have so much horny fun, hope I can see a picture of you in your shorts.” Over the course of approximately 12 days, Grunner exchanged multiple images with the minor, demonstrating a clear pattern of grooming behavior.
In early November, the undercover officer revealed that he was also speaking to another 14-year-old boy in Liverpool.
Grunner expressed interest in communicating with the second minor, asking for his Snapchat details before their conversations ceased on November 5.
On November 3, Grunner initiated contact with a different undercover profile, introducing himself and confirming he was gay.
The officer responded that he was 14, and Grunner agreed, sending two photographs of himself.
The conversations grew increasingly explicit, with Grunner admitting to having “a thing for boys in uniform” and expressing a willingness to engage in sexual activities, including “a bit of slap and tickle.” Throughout the exchanges, Grunner made several references to meeting the minors, including plans to meet in the woods in Wavertree, where he believed the ‘boy’ lived.
On November 10, he sent a message stating, “Don’t worry I’m not coming alone unless you’re home alone and I will park down the street and meet you,” indicating his intent to meet in person.
He also proposed giving the boy a massage and suggested he could pretend to be a family member taking him to the dentist if he left school early.
These plans culminated in an agreed meeting scheduled for November 16 at Picton Park in Wavertree.
However, before the meeting could take place, police intervened.
Officers stopped and arrested Grunner at the junction between Lake Road and Wellstead Road, directly opposite Picton Park, just moments before he was due to meet the minor.
During his arrest, Grunner was heard to say, “I’m guilty, I know what I did was wrong, why the f**k have I been talking to teenagers, I’m such a d***head.” In police interviews, Grunner admitted to his intentions, confessing that he wanted to engage in sexual activity with the boys he had been communicating with online.
He explained that he used Snapchat because messages could be deleted quickly, which he believed helped him avoid detection.
He disclosed that he had spoken to approximately 10 to 15 males aged between 14 and 22, claiming he was curious about where the interactions might lead.
He also admitted that something might have happened in the park had the meeting gone ahead.
Further, Grunner revealed that talking to these young men allowed him to “relive his youth,” and he acknowledged that his actions were sexually motivated and that he derived gratification from these online communications.
He admitted to being a paedophile and exploiting the vulnerability of what he thought were young, gay boys who had not yet come out publicly.
Judge Denis Watson KC sentenced Grunner to three years and four months in prison.
Additionally, an indefinite sexual harm prevention order was imposed, restricting him from possessing any device capable of connecting to the internet without police approval and prohibiting him from living with any male child under the age of 16.
The court’s decision reflects the severity of his grooming and predatory behavior, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable minors from such exploitation.
