In February 2015, a man named John Grant was sentenced to 14 months in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a vulnerable teenage girl in his vehicle. According to court reports, the assault occurred in July 2013 when Grant, then 64 years old and residing on Mowbray Drive in Leighton Buzzard, encountered the teenage girl in the Linslade area. The prosecution, led by Sally Mealing McLeod, detailed how Grant approached the girl and offered her a lift, despite the fact that he had previously been warned to keep his distance. The girl, who was described as vulnerable due to learning difficulties, was subjected to inappropriate comments and encouragement from Grant to consume a bottle of alcopops. During this interaction, Grant also engaged in sexual touching, which caused the girl to feel frightened and seek to escape.

The court heard that the girl told Grant to stop, expressing her fear that he might rape her. She managed to exit the vehicle, but Grant did not let her go easily. He followed her and attempted to persuade her to get back into the car. After this, Grant apologized and asked for her forgiveness, an act that further underscored the predatory nature of his conduct. The victim's quick thinking and courage allowed her to raise the alarm, which was a crucial factor in the subsequent legal proceedings.

Grant, who admitted to a charge of sexual assault, appeared before Luton Crown Court where Recorder Sandeep Kainth delivered the sentence.
