JOHN GIBSON FROM CARLISLE AND WORKINGTON SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING ONLINE PREDATION
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Carlisle and Workington, a man named John Gibson, aged 42, has been convicted of serious sexual offences committed through online communications.The incident came to light after Gibson was caught in an undercover police operation designed to target online predators seeking to exploit minors.
Gibson, a former employee at Sellafield, was found to have engaged in inappropriate and sexualized conversations with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl.
In reality, he was communicating with an undercover police officer.
The exchanges began on December 12 of the previous year, when the officer created a profile on a social media platform popular among young people, including children, and introduced herself as a 13-year-old girl residing in the UK.
Initially, the conversations between Gibson and the decoy were relatively mild, with some sexual undertones.
However, as the weeks progressed, the tone of their interactions became increasingly explicit.
Gibson sent the undercover officer photographs of himself without clothing from the waist up and made comments describing the girl as “sexy.” By January, the nature of the messages had escalated further.
Gibson began to ask the girl about sexual matters and even sent a photograph of his private parts.
He discussed engaging in sexual activities with her and expressed his desires openly.
Additionally, he sent obscene pornographic images of adults and an intimate picture of himself to the decoy.
Authorities arrested Gibson on February 4.
During police interviews, he admitted to deriving sexual gratification from these online conversations, acknowledging the inappropriate nature of his actions.
Judge Nicholas Barker, presiding over the case at Carlisle Crown Court, expressed his disappointment and concern over Gibson’s conduct.
He highlighted that Gibson was a man of previous good character, which made his actions all the more troubling.
The judge emphasized that Gibson had deliberately sought out young females on social media to engage in sexual conversations and grooming behaviors.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Barker stated, “This is undoubtedly what you were doing on this occasion.” He pointed out that Gibson had made lewd and disgusting remarks to someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl.
The judge also noted that Gibson was a family man with employment, both of which he has now lost due to his actions.
The loss of his job and reputation was described as a consequence of his own choices, and the judge warned that it might be difficult for him to regain employment in the future.
Despite the severity of the case, Judge Barker expressed a belief that Gibson still had the potential for rehabilitation.
As part of his sentence, Gibson was given a 16-month prison term, which was suspended for two years.
He is required to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities and will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.
Additionally, he will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a decade.
The judge concluded by reminding Gibson of the stark reality he now faces: “This is your reality: you are now a sex offender and that has with it a number of implications.”
