JOHN GAUNT CAUGHT IN WARRINGTON PLAYGROUND: SEX OFFENDER AVOIDS PRISON
In November 2017, a disturbing incident occurred in Warrington involving local resident John Gaunt, a known sex offender.Gaunt, who resides on Redshank Lane in the Birchwood area, was caught in a highly inappropriate act in a children’s playground, raising serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of monitoring sex offenders.
The incident took place on a housing estate off Woodpecker Close in Birchwood, Warrington.
A vigilant resident observed Gaunt, aged 31, engaging in the act of touching himself in the play area, which was filled with young children.
The witness promptly contacted the police, leading to Gaunt’s arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
Gaunt faced charges of outraging public decency by masturbating in a public place on March 26 of the same year.
During the court hearing, he denied the allegations, but later, in a plea for leniency, he asked the judge for an indication of the potential maximum sentence if he chose to plead guilty.
Judge Alan Conrad, QC, addressed the court, describing the nature of the offense as “rubbing his genitalia in public,” which is a serious breach of public decency laws.
The prosecution’s legal representative, Mr.
Rawson, explained that, based on sentencing guidelines, the offense falls into a category where the starting point is typically a community order.
The guidelines suggest that the maximum sentence for such an offense could be up to 22 weeks in prison, especially considering Gaunt’s prior convictions and his status on the Sex Offenders Register.
In response, Judge Conrad noted that if Gaunt were to plead guilty at this stage, any potential imprisonment would not be immediate.
Instead, it would be coupled with appropriate conditions aimed at preventing further offenses.
Gaunt, who appeared in court with short black hair, a goatee beard, and dressed in a long black jacket, only spoke to enter his guilty plea.
The judge ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared, which would assist in determining the appropriate punishment.
The sentencing was adjourned until December 8.
Meanwhile, Gaunt was remanded on conditional bail, with strict conditions that prohibit him from entering any children’s play areas or the vicinity of Woodpecker Close, Warrington, to ensure public safety and prevent any further incidents involving minors.
