November 2009 Newport man had sex with girl under 16 A NEWPORT man was jailed for two years and has to register as a sex offender after admitting having sex with a girl aged under 16. John Fullick, 26, of Coverack Road, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child – and Cardiff crown court heard that he had made the girl pregnant. Fullick had met the teenage girl in a pub last year, the court heard. Prosecutor Eugene Egan said the girl had lied at the time and told Fullick she was 17 years-old. A few days later, the two met up again and went to a car park at Llandegfedd reservoir, near Usk. They consumed cannabis in the car which Fullick provided before having unprotected sex, the court was told. It was after this that the girl told the truth about her age, but the court heard how Fullick continued to engage in sexual activity with the girl and had sex with her for two more months. The girl became pregnant to Fullick, but miscarried the baby, the court was told. It was only when the matter was reported by the girl’s mother that Fullick was interviewed by police in April, when he made a full admission to the offence. Rupert Lowe, for Fullick, said: “The girl was plainly vulnerable but she was also independent and in control of her actions.” He added that the girl had not made a complaint against Fullick. Judge Christopher Vosper QC said: “I am sentencing you for what you did after you found out about her age. “I accept she did a lot of the running, but this law is there to protect young girls from themselves.” Fullick will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register for the next 10 years.
