JOHN FULLICK SENTENCED IN NEWPORT FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRL NEAR USK
In a case that has shocked the Newport community, John Fullick, a 26-year-old man residing on Coverack Road, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16. The court also mandated that Fullick register as a sex offender for the next decade, highlighting the severity of his actions. The incident came to light after the teenage girl involved disclosed her relationship with Fullick, which had begun after they met in a local pub in Newport last year. According to court proceedings, Fullick initially believed the girl was 17, as she had falsely claimed at the time. Prosecutor Eugene Egan explained that the girl had lied about her age during their initial encounter, which took place in Newport.
Subsequently, the pair met again a few days later, this time at a car park near Llandegfedd Reservoir, close to Usk. It was during this meeting that Fullick provided cannabis to the girl, and the two engaged in unprotected sexual activity inside his vehicle. The court heard that after this encounter, the girl revealed her true age, but despite knowing this, Fullick continued to pursue a sexual relationship with her for an additional two months.
During this period, the girl became pregnant with Fullick’s child. Tragically, she later suffered a miscarriage, which was confirmed during the court proceedings. The case only came to police attention when the girl’s mother reported her concerns, prompting police to interview Fullick in April. During the interview, Fullick fully admitted to the charges against him.
Representing Fullick, lawyer Rupert Lowe argued that the girl was vulnerable but also maintained that she was independent and in control of her actions. Lowe also pointed out that the girl had not formally lodged a complaint against Fullick, suggesting a complex dynamic in the case.
However, Judge Christopher Vosper QC emphasized the importance of protecting young girls from exploitation. In his sentencing remarks, he stated, “I am sentencing you for what you did after you found out about her age. I accept she did a lot of the running, but this law is there to protect young girls from themselves.” Fullick was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years, reflecting the court’s stance on his conduct and the need for ongoing public safety measures.
