JOHN FLYNN FROM BELFAST CAUGHT IN CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL AT BELFAST CROWN COURT
In May 2018, Belfast Crown Court issued a stern warning to John Flynn, a man with a long history of offending, regarding his continued access to illegal images of children being sexually abused.Flynn, aged 62 and residing on University Street in Belfast, appeared before the court facing serious charges related to his possession and distribution of indecent images, as well as breaches of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (Sopo).
Flynn’s criminal record is extensive, with 78 previous convictions, which underscores the gravity of his latest offences.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching the Sopo and 14 counts of possessing indecent images of children.
The court was told that Flynn’s actions warranted a significant penalty, but ultimately, Judge Geoffrey Miller sentenced him to two years in prison, a sentence that was suspended for three years.
This means Flynn will not serve time unless he commits another offence within that period.
During the sentencing, Judge Miller emphasized the importance of Flynn engaging with rehabilitation programs and urged him to continue working with agencies that could help address his offending behavior.
The judge remarked, “You are an intelligent man who knows what your issues are and you know how to address them.
This is your final opportunity to address these issues.” Legal proceedings revealed that the Sopo was initially imposed in November 2011, which prohibited Flynn from deleting his internet usage history and from owning or using a mobile phone with internet access without approval from a designated risk manager (DRM).
Despite these restrictions, authorities uncovered troubling evidence.
In January 2016, police found a laptop at Flynn’s residence but initially could not access his internet history.
Later, they discovered 15 indecent images of children stored on the device, along with searches indicative of an interest in child abuse material.
Further investigations in June of the following year led to the seizure of a mobile phone and a tablet during a routine check at Flynn’s home.
When questioned, Flynn admitted that he should have informed his DRM about these devices.
He initially denied viewing any child sexual abuse images, claiming instead that such images appeared while he was searching for adult pornography.
However, the evidence suggested otherwise.
Flynn’s defense lawyer argued that his client’s offending behavior had significantly diminished, especially since he was now under strict monitoring and regulation.
The lawyer also highlighted the personal toll of Flynn’s actions, noting that he had lost his family due to his offending.
Despite this, the lawyer pointed out that Flynn was actively seeking help through church groups and was engaged with various support agencies.
Judge Miller, in delivering the sentence, expressed concern over Flynn’s attitude, noting that he appeared to lack remorse and displayed a “sexual entitlement attitude.” The judge also condemned the serious abuse depicted in the images, emphasizing the pain, discomfort, and fear experienced by the children involved.
The images were described as being for the “perverted pleasure” of viewers, which added to the severity of the case.
In a related case from July 2017, forensic examination of Flynn’s computer revealed the presence of the most serious category of indecent images of children.
Prosecutors detailed that search terms on Flynn’s device included references to rape victims and naked teenagers from Africa.
It was also disclosed that Flynn, who is 61 years old, recently married a 26-year-old Nigerian woman and had traveled to Nigeria 14 times over the past three years.
Flynn, residing on Ardenvohr Street, faced additional charges of possessing indecent images and breaching the Sopo.
He was granted bail under strict conditions, including surrendering his passports and allowing police access to his internet activity.
However, when police checked his computer in January of the previous year, no browsing history was available.
The laptop was seized and examined, revealing six Category A images, five Category B, and four Category C images.
Flynn was re-arrested last week, and several other devices were taken for further examination.
He denied downloading the images but admitted to using the search terms, which indicated his intent to find such material.
Prosecutors expressed significant concern that Flynn’s behavior showed little sign of stopping, and they opposed bail.
Nonetheless, bail was granted with the condition that Flynn seek help from organizations such as Sex Addicts Anonymous or charities dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse, as ordered by Madam Justice McBride.
