NORTHWICH MAN JAILED FOR RAPING BOY IN THE 1990S

A PERVERT who repeatedly raped a boy during the 1990s has been jailed for eight years.

John Derrick Jones, formerly of Northwich, was sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Thursday after admitting raping the boy dozens of times when he was aged between 11 and 14.

The 52-year-old Rhyl resident, who was abused by a gang of men when he was a teenager, carried out some of his attacks in a Northwich swimming pool changing rooms.

Jones had no previous convictions and the court heard he had served in the Army and Navy, raised money for charity and was also a voluntary lieutenant in the Army cadet force.

Judge Hale said Jones, who admitted two specimen rape charges on the boy between 1995 and 1999, could have received 12 years if he had been convicted after trial.

He said the victim had attempted suicide when he was older because of the attacks, adding: 'It is apparent it has had a devastating effect on that young man's life.' Prosecutor Simon Medland said the boy was 11 when the serious offences started.

It was estimated he was abused between 30 and 40 times.

The defendant, who has no criminal record, suffered a fit during interview.

Defense lawyer John Gibson stated that Jones regrets his actions and finds it harrowing.

He acknowledged the wrong he did, expressed shame, and bitterly regrets the harm caused.
