JOHN CHAPPELL'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN BRISTOL AND PLYMOUTH REVEALED AFTER 40 YEARS

In a case that has spanned over four decades, John Chappell, a man from Bristol, has been brought to justice for the sexual abuse of three young girls in Plymouth during the early 1970s.

The revelations came to light only after his victims courageously came forward, prompting a detailed investigation that culminated in his recent court appearance.

According to court records, Chappell, who was approximately 16 or 17 years old at the time of the offenses, managed to isolate the girls and commit acts of indecency against them.

One of these assaults occurred during a seemingly innocent game of hide-and-seek, where he asked a young girl to perform an indecent act upon him.

The Plymouth Crown Court heard that Chappell's predatory behavior was not limited to a single incident but involved multiple instances of abuse.

The court also learned that Chappell had a history of similar offenses earlier in the decade.

Despite this, he was only given a conditional discharge and a fine at that time, a decision that has since been described as remarkably lenient by the presiding judge.

It was only after the victims disclosed their experiences over the years—some of which they confided during a funeral—that authorities were able to piece together the extent of Chappell’s misconduct.

Specifically, Chappell pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting two girls under the age of 14 in 1974.

He also admitted to inciting one of these victims to perform an indecent act.

Additionally, he confessed to a similar offense involving a third girl.

The Crown Prosecution Service revealed that the first victim was subjected to multiple assaults, with Chappell asking her to touch him indecently on more than one occasion.

The second girl was abused on a single occasion, while the third was coerced into performing an act during their game of hide-and-seek.

Chappell’s criminal history includes a conviction in 1975 for a comparable incident, where he was found to have asked another girl to perform a sex act upon him.

For this, he received a three-year conditional discharge.

Two years later, in 1977, he was convicted of gross indecency with a child and fined a total of £300.

The judge overseeing the recent case, Ian Lawrie, expressed his surprise at the leniency of those earlier sentences, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses against vulnerable children.

During the sentencing, Judge Lawrie acknowledged that Chappell had been out of trouble for approximately 40 years.

He also took into account Chappell’s health condition, noting that the defendant suffers from curvature of the spine, which would cause him significant discomfort if he were to serve time in prison.

The judge clarified that the purpose of the sentence was to punish, not to exact revenge, and handed Chappell a suspended prison term.

The sentence was carefully crafted to reflect the seriousness of the crimes while considering the defendant’s health and the long period of apparent good behavior since the offenses.

Chappell, who resides at Tyler Close, Hanham in Bristol, accepted guilt on multiple counts of indecent assault and incitement involving minors.

The case has brought renewed attention to the importance of addressing historical abuse cases and the courage of victims who come forward after many years of silence.
