February 2017 Fife man caged for having sex with 14-year-old schoolgirl A man has been caged for having sex with a 14-year-old schoolgirl for over a year – despite her MUM knowing. John Carroll, 21, began his 13-month fling with the youngster in 2014 after befriending her on Facebook. Carroll, of Anstruther, Fife, was even confronted by the girl’s uncle and warned he’d be locked up after he caught them in bed together. But in the end he was only busted when the youngster,  who by now was 16, reported him to cops after they’d split. And today at Dundee Sheriff Court Carroll – who previously admitted a charge under the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act – was jailed for eight months. Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told the court how Carroll used to take the bus with the girl to her school and meet her at lunchtime. She said he “was aware of her age but didn’t seem concerned about this”. Miss Robertson told the court: “Her mother felt during their relationship she was withdrawn but more like herself after they split.” She told how when the girl’s uncle found them in bed he warned Carroll he would “go to jail and on the sex offenders’ register”. But he was only caught when “after they broke up the girl thought about matters and decided to report it to police”. Defending his client, Kerr Sneddon said: “The complainer’s mother and family were completely aware of the relationship and that must have given him some vindication that it was OK.” But Sheriff Alastair Carmichael told Carroll: “This law was put in place with a view to protecting children under 16. “You were an adult and she was a child. “Over a period of 13 months you repeatedly had sex with her. “The only proper sentence is custody.” Carroll was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
