JOHN CAINE FROM LIVERPOOL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN FLINTSHIRE AND WREXHAM
In August 2022, a disturbing case unfolded in Caernarfon Crown Court involving John Caine, a former BBC Radio Merseyside presenter originally from Gower Street in Liverpool. The court heard that Caine was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage boy from the Flintshire area during the late 1970s, a crime that has haunted the victim for decades.
At the time of the assault, Caine was a well-known figure in the broadcasting world, working as a presenter for BBC Radio Merseyside.
The court proceedings revealed that Caine, now 69 years old, appeared via video link from HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, where he is currently serving time.
The judge sentenced him to eight years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
It was also disclosed that Caine is already serving a sentence for similar offenses committed against teenage boys across three decades—spanning the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
This history of offending underscores a pattern of predatory behavior that has persisted over many years.
During the trial, it was revealed that Caine had gained the trust of the boy’s family and had cultivated a close relationship with the young victim.
He had impressed the boy with his flashy sports car and his role in broadcasting, which piqued the boy’s interest in radio.
To further his manipulation, Caine provided the boy with behind-the-scenes access to BBC Radio Merseyside, fostering a sense of familiarity and trust.
However, these visits were exploited by Caine as opportunities to abuse the boy.
The court heard that Caine groped the boy over his clothing on multiple occasions while driving him home from the radio station.
On one particularly disturbing occasion, Caine performed a sexual act on the boy while another unidentified man held him down.
The judge clarified that none of these acts occurred on BBC property, but the psychological damage inflicted was profound.
Prosecutor James Wilson presented a statement from the victim, who is protected by legal restrictions from being identified.
The victim described how the abuse has profoundly affected his life, stating that it has “defined his whole life” and filled him with an “intense feeling of guilt.” He explained that these traumatic events have created a stark division in his existence, describing his life as split into two parts: before and after the assaults.
The victim expressed that he has never been able to return to the person he once was or could have become if not for the abuse.
Judge Timothy Petts sentenced Caine to eight years in prison and imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for the next twenty years.
Additionally, Caine is required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
The judge highlighted the grooming process Caine used in the 1970s, noting that he befriended and groomed the teenage victim, impressing him with his personality, sports car, and access to BBC Radio Merseyside.
The judge emphasized the long-lasting impact of Caine’s actions, acknowledging the severe psychological harm caused to the victim and the profound effect on his life.
