JOHN BARNARD FROM BURSTLEM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In October 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving John Barnard, a 52-year-old man from Burslem, who was convicted of attempting to engage in sexual activities with a child he believed to be just 11 years old. Barnard’s actions came to light after he was targeted by the paedophile hunter group, Dark Light, which had set up multiple fake profiles online, including one pretending to be an 11-year-old girl named Jessica.

Over a period of several weeks, Barnard initiated contact with the profile, initially through online messaging and later via WhatsApp. His communications quickly took a disturbing turn as he began to ask Jessica to perform sexual acts on herself and expressed a desire to meet her in person for sexual purposes. Barnard’s messages included explicit requests for her to wear her school uniform during their supposed meeting and detailed plans to find a room where they could meet privately.

Furthermore, Barnard sent three explicit photographs of his private parts to the fake profile, demonstrating his intent and willingness to carry out his disturbing plans. He also asked if she wanted to be his 'sex slave' and proposed tying her to a bed so he could be her master, revealing his predatory mindset.

Members of the Dark Light group confronted Barnard at his residence on September 5. Following this confrontation, Barnard voluntarily accompanied one of the group members to the police station, where he was subsequently arrested and charged.

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Barnard pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to cause or incite a female child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as attempting to communicate sexually with a child between August 20 and September 3. His guilty plea was a significant step in addressing the serious nature of his offenses.

The court heard that the fake profiles, including the one used to lure Barnard, were part of an operation by Dark Light designed to identify and apprehend individuals seeking to exploit children online. The prosecutor, Siobhan Collins, emphasized the disturbing nature of Barnard’s communications, highlighting that he was immediately aware that the profile he was interacting with was an 11-year-old girl named Jessica. She explained that Barnard’s messages quickly became explicit, with him asking about her clothing and expressing regret that she was in Manchester while he was in Stoke-on-Trent. He even suggested that she wear her school uniform during their supposed meeting.

Collins detailed that Barnard sent three explicit images of his private parts and discussed performing sexual acts on her. His messages included inappropriate suggestions such as sitting on his lap, being spanked by teachers, and taking her virginity. These exchanges demonstrated a clear intent to exploit and harm a child.

Judge Dean Kershaw sentenced Barnard to three years and two months in prison. Additionally, he imposed a sexual harm prevention order and mandated that Barnard register as a sex offender for life. The judge expressed profound concern over the nature of the chat logs, describing them as very disturbing. He emphasized that Barnard’s engagement with the fake profile, knowing it was an 11-year-old girl, revealed a predatory mindset.

Judge Kershaw stated, “You are a paedophile. You are someone who thought about abusing a child. You said you would be proud if she was your daughter. You were talking about having sex. You talked about taking her virginity. You tried to arrange to meet her. Very thankfully, this was not a real child, but I am satisfied there was no incitement on her part at all. You are wholly to blame for it.”

The court’s decision underscores the importance of protecting children from predators like Barnard, whose actions could have led to severe harm had the scenario been real. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the critical role of vigilant groups and law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable children.
