JOE PEARSON PLYMOUTH SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 26 YEARS FOR RAPE AND ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS

In August 2023, a man named Joe Pearson, residing at Victoria Place in Stoke, Plymouth, was sentenced to a total of 26 years in prison after being convicted of multiple heinous sexual offenses involving young girls.

The Plymouth Crown Court heard how Pearson, aged 22 at the time of sentencing, committed a series of disturbing crimes over an 18-month period, leaving a devastating impact on his victims and the community.

Pearson was found guilty of three counts of rape—specifically targeting girls under the age of 15—and three counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activities with a girl aged between 13 and 15.

The court detailed how his offending spree began when he targeted a girl under 13, with the crimes taking place across different locations around Plymouth in 2019 and 2020.

The court revealed that Pearson’s predatory behavior persisted even after his initial arrest in May 2020, during which he was released under investigation.

Despite this, he continued to commit further offenses, including a rape in October 2020.

Following a nine-day trial, the jury found Pearson guilty of two counts of raping a child under 13 and one count of raping a teenager.

The court heard harrowing details of his crimes, including an incident at West Hoe Park where Pearson threatened one of his victims, calling her a “bitch” and “slag.” When she attempted to resist, he reportedly put his hands around her neck, causing her to see stars.

After the assault, Pearson reportedly smirked at her, displaying a lack of remorse.

Another victim recounted being anally raped despite her repeated protests, highlighting the brutality of his actions.

Judge Peter Johnson, presiding over the case, emphasized that all these offenses occurred within a relatively short span of 18 months and that each victim was particularly vulnerable.

He described the threats and violence used by Pearson, noting the trauma inflicted on the victims.

The judge stated that Pearson posed a “significant risk of causing serious harm to young females” and, therefore, imposed an extended sentence of six years on top of the initial 19-year term, bringing the total to 26 years.

The judge also ordered that Pearson serve two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being eligible for release on licence, which would include the extension period.

Furthermore, Pearson was placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and was prohibited from working with vulnerable adults and children for the rest of his life.

The court heard from prosecutor Peter Rouch KC, who explained that all three victims shared characteristics of vulnerability, being young and experiencing difficulties at home and school.

Pearson had met each of them online, grooming them before committing his crimes.

The grooming process involved targeting girls who were described as “young, vulnerable, troubled,” making them susceptible to his manipulations.

The court also heard detailed victim impact statements.

The first girl, who had left school due to bullying and trauma caused by Pearson, described her ongoing struggles with trust, flashbacks, and panic attacks.

She revealed that she now dresses in neutral colors to avoid drawing attention and experiences nightmares where she shouts “that’s enough” in her sleep.

The second victim described her experience as the “worst time of my life,” suffering from anxiety and depression, which led her to leave college.

She expressed pride in having protected others from similar abuse but remains haunted by her memories.

The third victim shared her feelings of alienation from her family, her struggles with sleep, and her descent into drug use as a way to cope with her pain.

She expressed feelings of worthlessness and despair, stating she often thinks about how her life has been affected.

In addition, the mother of the third victim delivered an emotional statement, describing the pain and helplessness she felt witnessing her daughter’s suffering.

She spoke of the “vile actions” of Pearson that scarred her entire family, shattering her daughter’s sense of safety and self-worth.

She recounted how her daughter’s mental health deteriorated, with her expressing feelings of worthlessness and despair, and hearing her scream in her sleep, saying, “I don’t want to be here anymore, I don’t belong in the world.” Judge Johnson highlighted that despite Pearson’s arrest in May 2020, he initially denied the allegations and continued to dismiss the severity of his actions.

The court noted that Pearson’s continued denial, despite overwhelming evidence, demonstrated a lack of remorse.

The judge condemned Pearson as a “sexual predator” who had left a trail of emotional devastation behind him, with victims brave enough to testify ensuring justice was served.

In conclusion, Pearson was sentenced to 19 years for his crimes, with an additional six-year extension due to the risk he posed.

He was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and barred from working with vulnerable individuals.

The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his offenses and the profound impact on his victims, who showed remarkable courage in coming forward to ensure he was held accountable.
