JODIE DAVEY FROM BRIDGWATER LEAVES CATS TO DIE IN ABANDONED HOUSE

In January 2024, a distressing case of neglect came to light involving Jodie Davey, a resident of Bridgwater, Somerset. Authorities were alerted after police received a report from a concerned member of the public, who had noticed that the occupant of a certain property had not been seen for several weeks. The situation was further alarming due to the presence of numerous flies around the residence, suggesting possible decomposition or severe neglect.

Following the report, the police coordinated with the RSPCA to investigate the property. RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Dean Wilkins was led into the premises by law enforcement and housing officials. Upon entering, he was confronted with a scene of squalor and neglect. The floor was cluttered with scattered items, and there were multiple piles of faeces, particularly concentrated near the rear door, indicating a severe lack of cleanliness and care.

During the inspection, Officer Wilkins discovered the tragic remains of two cats. Behind the sofa in the living room, a deceased tortoiseshell cat was found, its body showing signs of neglect. Further up the staircase, at the base of a wooden cabinet at the top of the stairs, another cat, a black one, was also found dead. The conditions inside the house painted a grim picture of abandonment and cruelty.

Investigations revealed that Jodie Davey had since moved out of the property and was now residing at a different location within Bridgwater. It was confirmed that she had callously left her two cats behind, neglecting their needs to the point of starvation and death. The case highlighted a heartbreaking failure to care for vulnerable animals, with Davey abandoning her pets in a state of extreme neglect.

In court, Davey was sentenced to a 12-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation. A ten-year ban was imposed, preventing her from owning animals in the future, although she has the right to appeal this restriction after seven years. The case underscores the importance of animal welfare laws and the consequences of neglecting domestic pets.
