JODI GRIFFITHS FROM GREAT TORRINGTON FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER CAT ABANDONMENT IN FREEZING CONDITIONS

In a distressing case that has drawn significant concern from animal welfare advocates, Jodi Christine Griffiths, a resident of Morton Drive in Great Torrington, was found guilty in 2018 of neglecting her pet cat, Tigger, during a particularly harsh cold snap in April of that year.

According to reports, Griffiths left her feline companion outside her home without providing adequate shelter or sustenance as the temperatures plummeted to near freezing levels. Tigger was observed waiting pitifully by the door, exposed to the elements day and night, with no access to food, water, or warmth. The neglect was brought to light by the RSPCA, with deputy chief inspector Suzy Hannaby leading the investigation.

Inspector Hannaby expressed her disbelief and concern over the case, stating, “As night temperatures dropped to near freezing, Tigger was outside day and night without any sort of provision and was spotted waiting pitifully by the door. Simply leaving pets outside before going away should never be seen as an option. I find it hard to believe that anyone could ever just abandon an animal who is completely reliant on them to fend for itself, but especially during cold weather.”

She emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, noting that cats should have continuous access to a warm, sheltered environment, whether inside the home or in a suitable outbuilding such as a barn, equipped with appropriate heating. Additionally, owners are advised to ensure their pets’ bedding or sleeping areas are warm, dry, and protected from drafts. The inspector underscored that if pet owners plan to be away, they must make arrangements to care for their animals and meet all their needs.

Following the investigation, Griffiths was sentenced to pay fines, costs, and charges totaling £230. Furthermore, she received a five-year ban from owning or keeping any animals, a measure intended to prevent future neglect and ensure animal welfare is prioritized in her care responsibilities.
