JERMAINE CLARKE BRADFORD PAEDOPHILE CAUGHT ON WEBCHAT WITH 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In a case that has shocked the community of Bradford, Jermaine Clarke, a man with a known history of offending, was brought before Bradford Crown Court to face serious allegations related to his inappropriate online conduct. Clarke, who is deaf and unable to speak, is a church-going individual with a documented history of sexual offenses, and his case has raised concerns about the effectiveness of community-based interventions for offenders with disabilities.

It was revealed during the court proceedings that Clarke had engaged in computer-based conversations with a 12-year-old girl via social networking site Facebook. These chats contained explicit sexual connotations, despite Clarke being under a court-imposed Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) that explicitly prohibited him from having any contact with children under the age of 16. This order was originally put in place in 2008 following Clarke’s arrest related to indecent images found on his computer.

Clarke, aged 33 and residing at Westwood Hall, Peregrine Way, Clayton Heights, Bradford, pleaded guilty to breaching the SOPO and to 11 counts of making indecent images. The images, totaling approximately 400, were classified at level one, indicating the least severe category, but they predominantly depicted naked girls aged between 11 and 14. Prosecutor Gerald Hendron detailed that Clarke had admitted to police that he was actively seeking out images of children and had identified himself as a paedophile.

Despite the restrictions placed upon him, Clarke had made contact with the young girl through Facebook’s web chat interface. During their conversations, Clarke expressed a desire to cuddle her and confessed to having a crush on her. The girl’s mother became suspicious and subsequently raised the alarm, prompting police intervention. Court reports indicated that Clarke, who required translation into sign language during proceedings, had made disturbing references to loving the girl and even expressed a desire to have a “threesome” involving her and another girl.

Clarke’s legal representative, Jayne Beckett, argued that there had been no further offending since 2009 and emphasized that Clarke had been making slow but steady progress in his rehabilitation. She warned that incarcerating him would halt this progress and potentially undo the work done to help him reintegrate into society.

The judge, Recorder Paul Watson QC, addressed Clarke directly, stating, “You are someone who, by your own admission, is sexually attracted to young female children. As such, you present real cause for concern.” He acknowledged the public’s perception that offenders like Clarke should be imprisoned, but also recognized the importance of community-based treatment programs. Ultimately, Clarke was sentenced to 51 weeks in jail, suspended for two years, with conditions including supervision and mandatory participation in a sex offenders treatment program. The court also issued a new order to monitor his conduct moving forward, reflecting the seriousness of the case and the ongoing risk posed by Clarke’s actions.
