EDINBURGH MAN JAILED FOR HOMICIDE OF PENSIONER
Jay Soso, a 20-year-old resident of the Tollcross neighborhood in Edinburgh, was found guilty of causing the death of 63-year-old Marie Reid, following an assault on her at her sheltered accommodation in November 2010.He pleaded guilty to the charge of culpable homicide.
During the court sessions, Lady Dorrian, the presiding judge, highlighted that Soso was aware of Mrs Reid’s frailty, stating, "You knew her and there was an element of trust in the relationship you had with her.
The rape was unquestionably forcible and violent, resulting in injuries that contributed to her death." Soso received a sentence of 12 years and eight months imprisonment from the Edinburgh High Court, with an additional five years of supervised release to protect the public.
It was revealed during the trial that Mrs Reid, who lived alone and was in declining health, had not left her home for six weeks before her death, initially leaving her cause unclear.
Forensic analysis confirmed DNA evidence linking Soso to samples found on the victim.
The court also took into account Soso’s limited intellectual capacity when delivering the sentence.
His actions led to Mrs Reid’s death, after he approached and assaulted her, resulting in significant legal penalties including incarceration and ongoing supervision.
