JATINDER PAL SINGH FAILS TO REPORT NEW ADDRESS IN NEWCASTLE, RISKING REPUTATION DAMAGE
In April 2022, a serious breach of legal obligations by Jatinder Pal Singh, a known sex offender residing in Newcastle, came to light.Singh, who had previously been ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years following his conviction, deliberately failed to inform the police of his change of address, an act that could have serious legal repercussions.
Singh, aged 38 at the time, was required by law to notify authorities within three days of any change in his residence.
This requirement was part of the conditions imposed after he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault in Gateshead in 2018.
The court's order was clear: any move must be reported promptly to ensure public safety and proper monitoring.
However, in October of the previous year, Singh moved from Bolam House, located near St James' Park in Newcastle, to a new address on Buckingham Street in the area of Arthur's Hill.
Despite this, he failed to inform the police about his relocation.
The breach was only uncovered four months later during a face-to-face check conducted by a police officer, revealing the oversight.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Singh had justified his failure to report his new address by expressing concerns over his reputation within the local Sikh community.
He claimed that he did not want his sordid past to be exposed or for police to appear at his new home, which could have led to social stigma and community backlash.
As a result of his failure to comply with the notification requirements, Singh faced legal consequences.
At Newcastle Magistrates' Court, he was sentenced to a 12-month community order and ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work.
Singh had previously been cautioned for a similar offence, indicating a pattern of non-compliance.
Prosecutor Clare Irving detailed the incident, stating that on February 23 of this year, police officers visited Singh's former address at Bolam House.
The property manager confirmed that Singh had moved out several months earlier, specifically on October 30, 2021.
When contacted by phone, Singh appeared to be unwell and claimed he was on his way to Forth Banks Police Station to report his new address, which he subsequently did.
During the interview, Singh admitted he had been living at his new residence for several months.
The court learned that Singh had rented the property from a friend and was reluctant to inform the police because he feared it would damage his reputation.
His defense lawyer, Gregg Stephens, explained that Singh, being a member of the Sikh community, was concerned about the potential social repercussions.
Stephens stated, “He’s a Sikh and there is a fairly large Sikh community in Newcastle.
His friend didn’t want him bringing police around to the address and he didn’t want the Sikh community asking what they were doing there.” Overall, Singh’s case underscores the importance of compliance with legal obligations for registered sex offenders and highlights the potential consequences of neglecting such duties, especially when concerns about reputation and community standing are involved.
