LIVERPOOL MAN SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS FOR PUBLIC SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER DRINKING SPREE
A woman's night out ended in tears when she was sexually assaulted outside a takeaway.Jason Singh was arrested in Concert Square for slapping the complete stranger on the backside, leaving her "shocked, distressed and humiliated".
It came after the dad brandished a machete during a fight which saw his girlfriend square off with two other women outside a block of flats.
This "warped attempt to protect his partner" was apparently set against the background of an ongoing feud which had seen him attacked and left requiring plastic surgery previously.
Liverpool Crown Court heard this afternoon, Friday, that the victim of Singh's sexual assault was drinking in Liverpool city centre with her boyfriend and other friends in October this year before their group went to Harper's Pizza on Slater Street shortly before 2am.
They were standing on the pavement outside the premises when she was slapped on the backside.
She was in shock, distressed and, no doubt, humiliated.
The fact that it was committed in public in front of many people must have added to her humiliation.
Singh has no previous convictions for sexual offences, but was handed a four-month imprisonment suspended for 18 months in August last year for possession of a bladed article in a public place.
During the court hearing, his lawyer said Singh recognises the effect of his actions and that alcohol is a major factor in his life, often causing him to act in a manner he regrets.
Singh admitted to sexual assault, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and breaching a suspended sentence order.
He was sentenced to two years in prison and told to sign the sex offenders' register for seven years.
Judge Garrett Byrne described the weapon as "quite a frightening looking item" and noted Singh's previous offences of a similar nature.
The judge indicated that Singh's behavior was influenced by alcohol and highlighted that Singh believed he was entitled to slap the woman on the backside, which was a clear violation of her personal space and rights.
The court was told that Singh has been trying to reform, attending Alcoholics Anonymous and engaging with his church.
He also has a trusted job as a cleaner and wishes to be a better father.
However, the judge emphasized that Singh's lack of genuine effort to stop drinking contributed to the severity of his sentence and that his actions, especially given his history, warranted a significant custodial penalty.
Overall, Singh's conviction and sentence reflect the judicial condemnation of his behavior, especially the sexual assault committed in a public setting, which caused the victim significant distress and humiliation.
