JASON SHAW'S SHAMEFUL CRIMES IN BELFAST: SERIAL FLASHER ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE DECADES OF OFFENSES

In May 2017, the case of Jason Shaw, a notorious sex offender from Belfast, drew significant attention as he narrowly avoided imprisonment after a series of disturbing incidents involving public indecency.

Shaw, who has a long history of exposing himself to women and minors, was convicted of a recent offense where he was caught performing a lewd act outside a woman’s residence near Botanic Avenue in Belfast.

Despite the gravity of his actions, he received a sentence of one year suspended for three years, a decision that has sparked public concern given his extensive criminal record.

Shaw, residing on Great Northern Street in South Belfast, has accumulated an alarming total of 41 prior convictions, with at least 20 related to indecent exposure or similar offenses targeting females and minors.

His criminal behavior dates back to at least 2003, when he was involved in three separate incidents in Newtownards, exposing himself to teenage girls aged between 14 and 17 on Victoria Street and East Street.

These early offenses marked the beginning of a pattern of predatory behavior that persisted over the years.

Throughout his criminal history, Shaw has been involved in multiple high-profile cases.

In 2011, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison after exposing himself to a schoolgirl in the changing rooms of a fashion store located in Belfast city center.

The following year, in 2012, he received an eight-month sentence for flashing at a mother and her daughter at Junction One shopping complex in Antrim.

His pattern of offending continued into 2016, with incidents including exposing himself while standing by a park bench, and being seen again in Botanic Gardens.

The very next day, he was spotted in a doorway on Botanic Avenue, exposing himself as several young girls passed by.

Further incidents involved Shaw being observed by students from Queen’s University, standing half-naked in a doorway on Malone Road.

In April of that year, security personnel at Queen’s University caught Shaw hiding beneath a parked car after students reported a man exposing himself near the university library.

These repeated offenses highlight a disturbing pattern of behavior that has persisted over decades.

In September 2016, Shaw’s aggressive reaction to a reporter outside Laganside Court in Belfast drew additional attention.

When approached for a comment, Shaw, who is 46 years old, lashed out physically by punching the reporter in the head.

This violent outburst was reported to the police and added to his troubled history of violent and sexual misconduct.

Most recently, Shaw was spared jail time for an incident in which he was seen pleasuring himself outside a woman’s house near Botanic Avenue in Belfast in May of the previous year.

He admitted to performing a lewd, obscene act in court and was sentenced to 12 months probation.

Additionally, he will remain on the sex offenders’ register for another five years.

This case followed a series of other convictions, including a two-year probation order issued just days earlier for five separate charges of exposing himself between August 2014 and April 2016.

During that period, Shaw was observed exposing his genitals to young girls and students at Queen’s University on three consecutive days in August.

Despite his repeated offenses, Shaw has often been released on bail, even while facing ongoing charges.

In April of the previous year, he was caught exposing himself again while out on bail, and in February, he was granted bail to attend a religious meeting at a nearby church, despite his history of sexual misconduct.

His criminal record, which stretches back to the 1980s, is filled with dozens of convictions for similar acts, making him one of Northern Ireland’s most prolific flashers.

His past includes a 2011 jail sentence for exposing himself to a schoolgirl in Belfast, and an eight-month sentence in 2010 for flashing at a mother and daughter in Antrim.

Shaw’s pattern of offending has led to him living at various addresses across Belfast and County Antrim.

At one point, he was forced to leave his family home in Ballycarry near Carrickfergus after his criminal history became widely known.

His ongoing behavior continues to cause concern among residents and authorities alike, highlighting the persistent challenge of managing repeat sex offenders in the community.
