June 2013 Abingdon man Jason Roberts jailed for child sex abuse A man who sexually abused a 10-year-old girl and later threatened to kill himself at a police station has been jailed. Jason Roberts was caught after his victim, now 15, told a teacher in March she had been sexually abused in 2009. Roberts, from Abingdon, admitted five counts of sexually assaulting a child aged under 13 and one count of possessing a bladed article in public. The 35-year-old was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Oxford Crown Court. Roberts was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years. After admitting to the offences in an interview with officers in March he was released on bail, police said. Just under a month later he entered Abingdon police station with a Stanley knife and threatened to kill himself. The station duty officer took the knife from him and Roberts was rearrested. Det Con Jeff Wheble said: “I am pleased with Roberts’ conviction, and that he pleaded guilty which meant his victim did not have to go through the further ordeal of giving evidence in court. “I would like to thank the victim for her courage in coming forward, and hope the conviction will encourage other victims of sexual abuse to report it to the police and the other authorities.”
