JASON NEWMAN FROM GREAT BEDWYN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SWINDON
In September 2023, a man from Great Bedwyn was handed a significant prison sentence after admitting to multiple serious sexual offences involving a young child. Jason Newman, aged 35 and residing on Castle Road in Great Bedwyn, pleaded guilty to a series of disturbing charges that have shocked the local community and prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities.Newman faced the court with allegations that included one count of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, as well as a charge of inciting or causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Additionally, he was charged with producing two indecent images of a child, classified as category B under the relevant legal framework. These offences, which span a range of heinous acts, were brought to light through a series of investigations that uncovered disturbing evidence against him.
The case was heard at Swindon Crown Court, where Newman was sentenced to a total of three years and five months in prison. The court also mandated that Newman must sign the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, a measure designed to monitor his activities and prevent further harm. Furthermore, he was placed under a sexual harm prevention order, restricting his access to certain online platforms and contact with minors.
The criminal proceedings against Newman stemmed from an incident in July 2021, when authorities discovered that an email address linked to him had uploaded indecent images of children onto the internet. This discovery prompted a police investigation that quickly led to his arrest. Following his initial arrest, Newman was released on bail while further inquiries were conducted. During this period, additional offences, including the sexual assault of a child, were uncovered.
In August 2021, Newman was re-arrested and again released on bail. Initially, he indicated that he intended to plead not guilty to the charges. However, as the case progressed, he changed his plea to guilty, leading to the sentencing that was handed down in September 2023. The case has garnered significant attention due to the severity of the offences and the impact on the victims involved, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable individuals.
