HEREFORD MAN SENTENCED TO HOSPITAL ORDER FOR DOMESTIC HOMICIDE
A man from Hereford has received a hospital order following a 'trial of fact' relating to the death of his mother. On 9 January, emergency services responded to Roman Road in Hereford at approximately 5:55pm after reports of a collision involving a van and a man.
The individual, identified as Jason Nellist, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Several hours later, authorities attempted to notify his mother, 59-year-old Julie Clark, about the incident and her son's condition, but discovered her dead at a property on Highmore Street.
She had sustained multiple stab wounds, and knives were recovered from the scene.
After being discharged from hospital, Nellist, aged 40 and residing at Nicholson Court in Hereford, was arrested and charged with causing his mother’s death.
Following his arrest, Nellist was readmitted to hospital but was later deemed mentally unfit to plead or stand trial in the usual manner.
A 'trial of fact' held at Birmingham Crown Court involved a jury being asked to determine whether he was responsible for the act, which they unanimously confirmed.
On 29 November, Nellist was sentenced to a hospital order, committing him to a psychiatric facility indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.
Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Roberts of West Mercia Police stated: 'Julie’s life was tragically ended by Jason in a violent act, which we believe also involved an intent to harm himself.
Our investigation into these tragic events led to criminal proceedings and a statutory Domestic Homicide Review to identify lessons that might prevent similar incidents in the future.
West Mercia Police strongly condemn domestic abuse and knife crime; although such incidents are uncommon in our area, we pursue all violent crimes diligently.
We extend our gratitude to the officers who worked tirelessly on this case and the support provided to Julie's family during this difficult period.
Our sympathies remain with them as they continue to grieve their loss.'
