JASON GURNER FROM GLYNCOCH CONVICTED OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES IN MERTHYR TYDFIL

In a case that has shocked the local community of Glyncoch, a jury at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court took less than sixty minutes to reach a verdict in the trial of Jason Gurner, a 50-year-old man accused of possessing and creating indecent images of children, as well as possessing extreme and bestiality photographs.

Gurner, a factory worker and a well-known member of the Glyncoch Fellowship Church, faced a total of 35 charges. These charges included six counts of possessing indecent images of children, 25 counts of producing such images, and four counts related to possessing photographs depicting bestiality. Despite his vehement denial of all allegations, the jury found him guilty on each count after a swift deliberation.

Authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of over 6,400 images and videos stored across multiple computers and drives at Gurner’s residence on Garth Avenue, Glyncoch. The content ranged from levels one to five, with level five representing the most severe and explicit material. Prosecutor Tom Crowther emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “The victims of these images and films were overwhelmingly not yet in their teens.”

Gurner’s involvement in the case came to light through an incident involving a computer sale. He sold a computer to a work colleague, Lee Harris, on April 13, 2011. Harris, concerned about the contents of the device, reported the matter to the police. The last known image stored on the computer was dated the day before the sale.

Initially, Gurner denied any involvement with the illicit images. However, during a subsequent police interview, he confessed to being a paedophile and admitted to viewing images of young girls, claiming these files could be found hidden within the computer’s system. He explained that his confession was motivated by a desire to prevent his wife, Sheila, a teaching assistant, from being arrested and questioned.

Later, Gurner retracted his confession and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court was informed that police had not been aware of the hidden files until Gurner himself admitted their existence. During cross-examination, Gurner claimed ignorance about how the images came to be on his computer but acknowledged that they must have been downloaded during his work in a computer workshop.

Throughout the trial, character witnesses described Gurner as a dedicated family man with strong moral and religious convictions. Despite these character references, the evidence presented in court painted a disturbing picture of his involvement in the possession and creation of child abuse images, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
