JASON EDWARDS FROM EBBW VALE CAUGHT IN UNDERCOVER POLICE STING IN CARDIFF

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Ebbw Vale, Jason Edwards, a 38-year-old council worker from Queensway, Garnlydan, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation involving online predatory behavior. The incident unfolded in November 2019 when Edwards was caught in an undercover police operation designed to expose individuals attempting to engage in sexual communication with minors.

According to court proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, Edwards had been actively using the Canadian Kik chat application, a platform notorious for its misuse by individuals seeking to discuss child abuse and share inappropriate images. Under the guise of a 16-year-old boy, Edwards initiated contact with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old named ‘Toby’. In reality, this individual was an undercover police officer, known only by the alias ‘Kev’, who was posing as a Hampshire-based teenager.

Prosecutor Nigel Fryer explained that the police operation was part of a broader effort to combat online child exploitation. The court was told that Edwards made sexually suggestive comments and attempted to engage ‘Toby’ in sexual conversations. The police raid on Edwards’s home, which he shared with his parents, took place on June 4. During the arrest, Edwards claimed to have no memory of sending an explicit photograph to ‘Toby’, asserting that he was under the influence of cocaine at the time. He also stated that he was in a relationship with a woman.

Edwards pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to cause a boy to engage in sexual activity and attempting to communicate sexually with a child. It was noted that he had no prior convictions, aside from a single caution for resisting or obstructing a police officer. During the hearing, Edwards, who chose to represent himself, expressed remorse, stating, “I want to say sorry to my mam and dad and my family. I feel ashamed, embarrassed and disgusted with myself. I promise I won’t do it again.”

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke acknowledged Edwards’s previous good character and low risk of reoffending. Nonetheless, she sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, Edwards was ordered to adhere to a three-month curfew from 8 pm to 6 am, complete 200 hours of unpaid work, and participate in a 35-day rehabilitation program. He is also required to attend 27 sessions of the Horizon sex offender treatment scheme. Furthermore, Edwards must register as a sex offender for seven years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration. A victim surcharge of £115 was also imposed as part of the sentence.
