POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR STRANGLING, ASSAULTING AND THREATENING WOMAN WITH KNIFE
A former police officer has been sentenced to prison after assaulting a woman and threatening her with a knife.Jason Corley, aged 42 and residing in Oaklands, Framingham Earl, was serving as a police constable with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) at Sizewell when he physically attacked a woman, grabbing her by the throat and knocking her off a kitchen stool.
During the trial at Norwich Crown Court, it was revealed that Corley dragged the woman across broken glass, pressed a kitchen knife against her throat, and made a threatening statement: "If I’m going down, it’s going to be for something good." The judge, Rt Hon Judge Andrew Shaw, dismissed the defendant’s claim that Corley felt remorse for his conduct.
He was ordered to serve at least 18 months in prison, with the remaining time of his three-year sentence to be served on licence.
Additionally, an indefinite restraining order was imposed against him.
Detective Sergeant Ryan Westrop, who led the inquiry, commented: "This was a particularly violent attack in which Corley strangled the victim, used a knife to threaten her and then told her nobody would believe her.
"He abused and exploited the trust she had placed him and made her fear for her life.
"Today’s sentence goes some way to reflect the horrible level of violence he committed and although, sadly, the long-term psychological trauma will remain with her for some time, I hope today’s sentence goes some way to offering closure.
"She has shown great bravery in coming forward to tell us what happened, and I want to thank her for doing so.
"This sentence should be a message to those who carry out such abhorrent acts that they will not be tolerated, we will investigate these allegations and seek justice for the victims." Corley was found not guilty on other charges, including rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour, during a trial held at Norwich Crown Court in July 2023.
