JASON BOWDITCH AND SAMANTHA REES-BOWDITCH SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY IN GOSPORT
In 2019, Jason Bowditch, born on 16 September 1975, and Samantha Rees-Bowditch, born on 3 May 1974, both of Whitworth Road, Gosport PO12 3NN, were convicted of causing suffering to two dogs by starving them until their bones were visible. RSPCA inspectors rescued the emaciated cross-breed dog named Sazzle and a terrier called Leggs following a tip from a concerned member of the public. The condition of Sazzle was described as shocking; inspectors stated it was 'hard to believe' he was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross with a Labrador. When found in August 2018, the dog was in such a state of starvation that 'every bone was showing.' Video footage taken at the scene shows Sazzle quickly devouring a bowl of food after his rescue.
The defendants admitted to neglecting the needs of the two dogs. RSPCA inspector Charlotte Coggins, who led the investigation, commented: 'This was a frustrating and saddening case where these two dogs were left without the care they desperately needed. Sazzle was in a shocking condition when we first saw him, with every bone showing. It was hard to believe he is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossed with a Labrador.'
She further explained, 'Veterinary examination found no medical reason for the weight loss, and both dogs gained weight simply from being provided with an adequate diet. It would have been obvious to anyone looking at these dogs that they were desperately thin and in urgent need.'
Both Sazzle and Leggs have since recovered. A photo shows Sazzle now, in a healthy state, indicating that they have gained weight and condition after their ordeal.
Regarding sentencing, the court banned Jason Bowditch and Samantha Rees-Bowditch from keeping any animals for a period of three years, although this ban expired in March 2022. The case was reported by ITV News and the Daily Echo.
