CAREFUL JASMINE CHALLANDS BLAMES ALTER EGO IN CARLISLE SEX OFFENDER CASE

In a case that has drawn significant attention in Carlisle, a woman named Jasmine Challands, aged 46, appeared in court to face serious allegations related to possession of explicit and illegal images.

The proceedings revealed a complex and troubling history involving her identity and psychological state.

Challands, who was formerly known as Peter Challands, was accused of possessing four highly explicit images that depicted a realistic and extreme portrayal of rape.

Additionally, she was charged with possessing indecent images of children.

The police investigation uncovered these illicit materials on USB storage devices that Challands had hidden within a box of Lego at her residence in Carlisle.

During the court hearing conducted via a video link from Durham Prison, Challands appeared confused and uncertain when asked to enter her pleas.

Her initial response was, “What am I supposed to say?” Her defense lawyer, Jeff Smith, intervened and clarified the situation, leading Challands to admit guilt to both charges.

Mr.

Smith explained that although the defendant was formally known as Peter Challands, Jasmine had communicated that she held her former self responsible for the offending behavior.

The court was informed that Challands had been living on Warwick Road in Carlisle.

The judge, David Swinnerton, acknowledged the unusual psychological background of the case, referencing previous similar instances involving a “split” personality or multiple identities within a single individual.

The judge remarked, “I am sure there is some complex psychological background,” and ordered that a detailed psychological or psychiatric report be prepared to aid in sentencing.

Challands was remanded into custody, with her sentencing scheduled for July 14.

The judge emphasized that more information was needed before a final decision could be made, particularly regarding the contents of the USB sticks.

He also indicated that the sentence for these offenses was likely to involve imprisonment.

Prior to this, in March, Challands had appeared before magistrates in Carlisle, where she admitted to breaching a sexual harm prevention order by secretly possessing the USB devices.

During that hearing, she described herself as a “tortured” individual, facing a long and difficult personal journey as she transitioned to become a woman.

When questioned about the devices, she claimed they belonged to her former self, Peter Challands, and that he had committed “bad things.” Her defense lawyer described her as “tortured, regarded by no-one, and respected by no-one,” adding that she had expressed feelings of confusion about her identity and future.

Despite her gender transition, the court was advised that her legal documents still listed her as Peter Challands.

Challands has been a registered sex offender since 2019, following her previous conviction for possessing indecent images of children.

Her ongoing legal issues highlight a complex case involving mental health, gender identity, and serious criminal allegations.

In a related case from September 2020, another Carlisle sex offender, Peter James Challands, aged 44, was detained in Durham Prison while awaiting further charges.

He had been held since February and expressed to probation staff that he did not wish to be released, citing a sense of safety within the prison environment.

However, the court ultimately decided to release him under supervision, believing that working with the Probation Service was the best way to protect the public.

Challands had admitted to four offenses, including failing to comply with the Sex Offender Register, breaching court orders, and possessing 192 prohibited images of children.

The images included material showing sexual activity involving children as young as five, stored on a computer flash drive that Challands failed to disclose to authorities.

He also acknowledged abusing alcohol and engaging in online sexualized interactions with males.

Judge Nicholas Barker expressed concern over the nature of Challands’ collection of images, noting that although they were animated and not real, they still posed a significant risk.

The court considered his time on remand, which equated to a 14-month jail sentence, and concluded that incarceration would not serve as a protective measure for the community.

Instead, the judge imposed a three-year community order, including 20 days of rehabilitation and participation in a Sex Offenders’ treatment program.

Challands was also subjected to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the same duration.
