EDINBURGH MUSIC TEACHER JA SUTHERLAND JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In October 2008, a disturbing case emerged involving a music teacher from Edinburgh who was found to have been viewing and possessing a vast collection of child abuse images on his personal computer.

The individual, who later adopted the name JA Sutherland in an effort to distance himself from this case, was at the time a part-time music instructor at various schools across Edinburgh and also served as a youth worker at two prominent city churches.

Authorities acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off, leading to a police investigation that uncovered approximately 4,000 images stored on Sutherland's laptop.

These images depicted children as young as four years old being subjected to abuse, with some classified as the most severe level five images, according to the Edinburgh Sheriff Court proceedings.

The sheer volume and disturbing nature of these images highlighted the gravity of the offense.

During the sentencing, Sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie emphasized the role Sutherland played in perpetuating the demand for such illicit material.

She stated, “It is clear that the children involved, some as young as four years old, had been exploited in the most horrific way.” The sheriff further explained that given the number and severity of the images, a custodial sentence was the only appropriate punishment.

Consequently, Sutherland was sentenced to 18 months in prison and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years.

Sutherland, a professional chorister, faced immediate repercussions at his place of employment.

He was dismissed from his roles at St John’s Church on Princes Street and St Mary’s Church in Edinburgh after he disclosed to church ministers that he was under investigation.

During police interviews, he admitted that his initial interest was research into how children are portrayed in society, but he confessed to becoming “hooked” on viewing sexual images of children.

He claimed that his viewing habits began with child modeling sites before escalating to more explicit and harder images.

Despite this, Sutherland maintained that he was not sexually aroused by the images.

The court was informed that Sutherland had sought psychiatric help in an attempt to address what was described as an “unhealthy fascination.” Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to charges of allowing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children to be taken or made at his residence between March 2004 and January 2008.

His solicitor, Andrew Gibb, highlighted that Sutherland’s case was unusual because he did not save any of the images after viewing them.

Gibb also noted that the majority of the images were classified as level one, which, while not excusing his actions, provided some context for his behavior.

Sutherland, who resides on Dalgety Avenue in Edinburgh, has since resigned from his teaching position and is currently not employed.
