October 2010 Man jailed for raping teenager in Hornsea in 1979 A man has been jailed for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in East Yorkshire more than 30 years ago. Jamie Smith, 52, of Sun Street, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, attacked the girl as she walked along Hornsea Burton Road in Hornsea in 1979. A large police inquiry was started at the time but he was only arrested in July after new forensic developments led to him being identified. He appeared at Hull Crown Court and was jailed for five-and-a-half years. Police said Smith’s DNA was matched to the crime after he was arrested for the cultivation of cannabis. Det Supt Dena Fleming said: “In this case the victim went through a traumatic and terrifying ordeal but showed extreme bravery throughout.” Smith attacked the girl as she walked home alone from the Oceans nightclub – since demolished – on South Promenade. He punched her in the face and dragged her to a grassed area, where he raped her. The victim screamed and managed to bite her attacker’s finger, drawing blood. It was AB positive which matched Smith’s blood type. Only three per cent of the population have that blood type and Smith even had it tattooed on his arm. In a victim impact statement read to Hull Crown Court, the girl said: “I have blocked out what happened and put those memories away. I don’t want to see him again. At least I didn’t die.” Smith had told the girl lies about being in the Territorial Army which led to an innocent man being arrested for the crime.
