JAMIE FULLER FROM ASH SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON BABY IN GUILDFORD

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Ash and the surrounding areas, Jamie Fuller, aged 27, has been sentenced to a significant prison term after being found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on a seven-month-old baby boy. The incident, which took place over a span of ten days leading up to July 11, 2010, involved acts of violence that left the young child with multiple injuries, including bruises, a broken rib, and bite marks on his shoulder and buttock.

Fuller, residing on Lancaster Close in Ash, was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm as well as three counts of actual bodily harm to his former girlfriend’s infant son. The trial, held at Guildford Crown Court last month, revealed the extent of the child's injuries, which were confirmed by medical experts to be non-accidental. The child's mother, concerned about the injuries, took him to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where doctors documented the bruises and other trauma.

During the court proceedings, Judge Neil Stewart considered Fuller’s prior criminal record, which included convictions for harassment and battery, alongside the vulnerability of the young victim, who was under Fuller’s care at the time. The judge expressed his disapproval, stating, “You were involved in caring for him and you abused the trust that was placed in you. This was not a sustained attack but it was part of a course of conduct in the course of that week. It seems to me that it was not something that was planned, but a cause of a loss of temper.”

Judge Stewart also highlighted Fuller’s apparent difficulty with temper control, noting that the assaults appeared to be impulsive rather than premeditated. The attacks occurred during a period of ten days, and the severity of the injuries prompted a thorough investigation. Expert witnesses testified that the bruises were likely inflicted intentionally, and a dental examination confirmed that the bite marks were probably made by an adult, not a child.

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Fuller maintained his innocence, denying all counts. Throughout the trial, his family and friends submitted letters to the court, describing him as a person of good character and highlighting his normally kind nature. These letters, including those from his mother, current partner, and her father, were presented to the judge in an effort to provide a more balanced view of Fuller’s character.

Judge Stewart acknowledged these character references but emphasized the gravity of the crime, especially given the victim’s age. “They speak very highly of you in each case. They have difficulty coming to terms with the fact you have been convicted,” he said. Addressing Fuller directly, the judge added, “You have two young daughters and there has been no criticism or complaint about the way you have conducted yourself with them. This will impact on them. That is unfortunate, but inevitable.”

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Stewart also reflected on Fuller’s difficult upbringing, which he noted while passing sentence. “You faced considerable difficulties in your early life,” he said. “You are now an adult and responsible for your own actions. The victim of this offence was at the time a seven-month-old baby. That is quite clearly a very serious aggravating factor to deal with.”

Encouragingly, the judge mentioned that the child, now aged two, had made a full recovery from his injuries. “The future, I hope, for him will be bright,” he stated.

Fuller was sentenced to an extended term of ten years, comprising six years in custody and an additional four years on licence. He was also ordered to be barred from working with children in the future. Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Paddy Mayers commented on the case, saying, “The sentence reflects the severity of this crime and the disgraceful injuries inflicted on such a young, defenseless infant. The offences have had a profound impact on the mother and the extended family, who have endured a long and difficult investigation while coping with the trauma of the crimes. The family is to be commended for their support throughout this process.”
