JAMIE COBDEN AND SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING IN NEWCASTLE

A man from Newcastle who engaged in disturbing online grooming activities targeting a young girl was ultimately brought to justice after his illegal actions were uncovered by her father.

The incident began when Jamie Cobden initiated contact with the girl via Snapchat, claiming to be 18 years old despite her being only 14 at the time.

Within just two days of their initial communication, Cobden shifted the tone of their conversations to a sexual nature, describing his desires and inquiring about her school uniform.

The grooming persisted over approximately four months, during which Cobden revealed his true age of 26.

He attempted to persuade the girl that 'age was just a number' and expressed a desire to be her boyfriend.

The girl, however, expressed discomfort with this proposition.

Despite her reservations, Cobden pressured her into sending sexual images and videos, which she later admitted made her feel scared to refuse.

He also sent a photograph of his genitals to her, further crossing boundaries.

The Newcastle Crown Court heard that Cobden continued to pressure the girl to meet him in person, promising to take her out for dinner and to a hotel.

She consistently used the excuse that her parents would not permit her to meet him, and as a result, the meeting never took place.

The illegal contact was only discovered after the girl accidentally dropped her phone into a bath and asked her father to repair it.

When her father examined her device out of parental concern, he found the messages and images exchanged between her and Cobden.

Following this discovery, police were contacted, and Cobden was promptly arrested.

The girl also took steps to block him on social media, although she later accepted a Facebook friend request from him.

During their communication, Cobden expressed that he missed her, and she admitted to still having feelings for him, though she stated she could no longer continue talking to him.

An investigation into Cobden’s devices revealed a total of 2,037 messages exchanged between him and the girl, some of which were of a graphic nature.

Authorities also uncovered two indecent images classified as Category C, downloaded online, depicting girls aged between 12 and 15 in shower scenes while wearing T-shirts.

In a victim impact statement read in court, the teenage girl described her emotional turmoil.

She said, 'I was only 14.

To this day I’m very confused about how this affected me.

I thought I was in love with him.

I feel so guilty about everything and would tell myself how horrible a person I was.

I was extremely lonely and he made me feel loved.

Maybe he did love me or maybe he was just taking advantage of a young girl.' She expressed her pain at having to reinvent her life after the ordeal and emphasized her desire to prevent other girls from experiencing similar trauma.

Jamie Cobden, aged 30, of Bentinck Road in Newcastle, who had no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual communication with a child, and possessing indecent images.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

The court acknowledged the extent of the grooming involved, with Recorder Mark McKone KC describing the offending as persistent over a six-month period, with detailed and graphic exchanges.

Defence solicitor Jane Foley explained that Cobden was a lonely individual who had recently moved from Brighton to the North East following the birth of his child’s mother.

She stated that he was deeply remorseful for his actions, which had severely impacted his relationship with his daughter, resulting in minimal contact.

She added that he suffers from low mood and continues to feel guilty, a burden that will likely weigh on him for many years.

Following sentencing, Detective Sergeant Richie Jobson of Northumbria Police emphasized that while no punishment can fully erase the trauma inflicted on victims, the case demonstrated the police’s commitment to protecting children from predators like Cobden.

He praised the efforts of the digital forensic team in uncovering hidden evidence and highlighted that the comprehensive investigation led to a guilty plea, serving as a warning to others contemplating similar crimes.

He also commended the bravery of the young girl who came forward and shared her experience, reaffirming the police’s dedication to supporting victims and ensuring offenders face justice.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing fight against online grooming and exploitation in Newcastle and beyond.
