JAMIE BALDWIN SENTENCED IN HULL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRL
In September 2017, a woman who was sexually assaulted as a young girl broke down in court while describing the lasting trauma she endures, stating it has 'consumed her.' The victim, who remains unnamed for legal reasons, was subjected to prolonged abuse over several months in East Yorkshire during the early 2000s.She courageously faced her abuser, Jamie Baldwin, 33, in court, where he was brought to justice.
Baldwin, who subsequently moved to Scotland in an attempt to start anew, was convicted of multiple offenses after court proceedings revealed the full extent of his crimes.
During the trial, Baldwin admitted to instructing the girl to hide her clothes after one incident, and the abuse escalated over time, with him gaining 'exactly what he wanted,' the court heard.
The woman recounted the devastating impact of the abuse, saying: "Since the abuse, it has always affected me, and on some days, it consumes me.
I suffer from severe depression and anxiety, often waking from nightmares terrified.
My innocent girl sees me crying because we only have each other.
My anxiety controls me, and it should not be my daughter consoling me; it should be the other way around." She broke down in tears while giving her victim impact statement, expressing her fears of encountering Baldwin again in Hull.
The trauma has also made it difficult for her to be intimate, as she remains worried about her daughter's safety.
"I cannot allow myself to bring anyone into mine and my daughter’s lives.
He took away my childhood and corrupted my life.
I have lived in darkness all these years.
He has shown no remorse and took exactly what he wanted from the abuse," she said.
Court proceedings established that Baldwin's abusive behavior began in the early 2000s.
The initial incident involved Baldwin giving the girl a can of lager before forcing her to touch him.
As time went on, he became increasingly invasive, touching her himself.
Recorder Elliott QC described the abuse as 'calculated and persistent,' emphasizing that the effects on his victim were 'horrendous.' The woman bravely recited her impact statement, stating: "I have not spent my life living—I have spent it merely existing.
I don’t fully understand his reasoning for his actions, and I don’t think knowing would benefit me.
I hope he knows now that his actions were wrong and have consequences for us all." In sentencing Baldwin, Recorder Elliott QC acknowledged the severity of the case: "The victim’s impact statement makes for terrible reading.
The trauma she has endured and continues to endure, along with its impact on her and her daughter, is profound.
While she will never forget, I hope the conclusion of this case provides some measure of healing.
These offences demand a substantial custodial sentence." Baldwin was convicted of four offenses, including two counts of sexual assault with penetration of a child under 13.
He received a six-year prison sentence and will serve half before being released on licence.
No sexual harm prevention order was imposed, given the time elapsed since the offenses and the absence of any similar incidents since.
